The Word of Promise Audio Bible: New King James Version

From AudioFile

The elements of voice, sound, and music are densely woven together in this complete New King James Version of the Bible. Producer Carl Amari and director JoBe Cerny use many audio drama techniques (more than the average audiobook or even contemporary audio drama) to create the people and places found in the Bible. This production style is highly effective in retelling these stories--thanks to the many talented actors who populate the cast--but it can also be overused. The score is so dense and constant that it leads the listeners' emotions, instead of letting them come to their own understanding. The one audio storytelling element that's missing is silence, which is often where we find insight. Given the deeply personal messages often found in the Bible, a little more sonic room would give listeners the opportunity to find their own understanding of these words. I got this for my wife because she was wanting the audio bible to listen to at night before turning in to sleep. When we received it she was very pleased with it. She had heard of this particular audio Bible product before but had forgotten the name of it. We listen to it in the car while driving as well as at night. There are 79 CDs, so we try to do one CD in two days, which has not been difficult to do.We are both impressed with this Bible and would recommend it to anyone that is searching for an complete audio Bible.

This set/collection is fantastic. I highly recommend it to everyone regardless of your knowledge of the Bible. Beginners will be immersed in the more than 600 famous voices many recognizable. There are a lot of disks to have to manage, therefore I used iTunes to import each cd then grouped and titled them for easy identification.THERE IS ONLY ONE NEGATIVE, this set WILL NOT and CANNOT be used in Amazon's "my music." I spent about an hour on the phone with an Amazon rep that tried to see if there was any way possible to get these mp3 files downloaded to my Amazon Fire. What we learned was, in Dec '17, Amazon stopped allowing 3rd party downloads into the 'FIRE" even if you bought the media from them! I bought the set from Amazon and it still considered 3rd party. I'm not sure why. All my other CDs bought through Amazon seamlessly transferred to "my music" to be used on all my devises. The Amazon rep's only suggestion was to write this review and hope that in the future there would be an mp3 version from Amazon to download. So, if you plan on taking this collection with you note that it will only work through iTunes. Without getting to private, where I need to use the "FIRE" is in a hospital and you cannot get wifi. Therefore, you have to take with you anything you want to watch or listen to on a disk or on a tablet. If I had known that I wouldn't have bought the Amazon Fire. Worth noting, should you know the entire set transferred is about 13.14 GB and 90 hours. I'm going to have to figure another way. I want to take this great collection with me during my stay(s).

Breath taking. When I listened to Jim Caviezel's testimony on Youtube where he also talked about this audio bible, I got to hear a sample of it. I immediately ordered it.The package arrived and I couldn't wait to open it. There was a nice CD carrying case under the lid that can accommodate a portion of the CD's. My family gathers, we turn down the lights and start playing it. Unbelievably awesome. Everything about this masterpiece is great. You feel like you're being immersed into biblical times and are left thinking about what you heard for hours and days. The actors and the sound track bring the bible to life in such a way that you won't forget what you listened to.

Having the entire Bible on CDs is very convenient for drive-time or around the house while doing chores, just listening or for actual Bible Study. The reading is from the NEW KING JAMES VERSION. The dramatizations bring deeper dimensions to the Bible learning experience for any age group. For the most part the actor's voices seem to suit the characters nicely. The familiar stories, such as The Creation, The Flood, David & Goliath, Abraham, Parting the Red Sea, the Birth of Christ, the Birth of the Church at Penticost, the stoning of Stephen and all the others, are all very well done and hold the interest. The Psalms are beautifully executed with the use of mixed voices. The Prophets are artistically punctuated. The first chapter of Ezekiel and portions of Revelations transport one to the throne room of God. Jim Caviezel's voice perfectly portrays the tenderness and love of the Lord Jesus Christ. All this is highlighted by a magnificent and moving original musical score. The 2 yrs and immense talent of the 500 actors and producers that went into the production of this version of the world's most beloved Book is very evident. It does honor to the original AUTHOR of the text- Who Himself IS "THE Living WORD OF PROMISE".The set of 79 CDs also includes a handy small traveling case for transporting a few CD discs a time.We highly recommend this as a gift for yourself or others <><

Wow! All I can say is wow! I have no idea how they took the time to make this with all of the actors, sound effects, etc. I've been reading the Bible for 3+ years all the way through and I'm just to the New Testament. It simply is worth every penny and then some. You don't have these monotone readers like you might with other apps. This product has real actors that you've heard of - think Jim Cavezel, Richard Dreyfuss, and the guy who was Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars movies. I kid you not, the guy is the voice of God. That kinda made me laugh for a bit because I had to get my mind around the fact that this wasn't the Emperor speaking but is supposed to be God. So any Star Wars fan will have a good laugh when the great I AM is talking.

I bought the MP3 version which was roughly 11 CD's as I recall. The CD's have the MP3 files ready to copy to your jump drive or MP3 player without the need to do any conversion. Then I just stick the USB jump drive into my car's USB port and I am able to listen to this very-well-done audio Bible. I really enjoy the attention to detail and the voiced acting. I have already verbally recommended it to several people and will continue to do so.

Bought this for my husband. He has a 45 minute commute to and from work and we don't get very many radio stations in our area. He doesn't have satellite radio in his car like I do so he really loves listening to these on his drive. The kit is very nice and packaged very well. It comes with a carrying case for easy transport. The CD's are organized in hard cases and labeled according to each book of the Bible. He loves the sound effects and how each character has a different voice from the many different actors used to create this series. Well worth the money!

I had completely forgotten that I had pre-ordered this, and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived one day. Dobby is easily my favourite Harry Potter character, and represents so much good in the world, and this is a wonderful depiction of him and some of his memorable quotes from Chamber of Secrets. I really only can say that I wish they would have included the dialogue from Deathly Hallows, Part I, but you cannot have everything.

Very well done but will not stand being dropped. Not for kids as a play toy. Photo is from desk top drop onto floor.

This little Dobby figure is an excellent replica! The voice sounds just like his and the little book that comes with him is a sweet addition. It has quotes from Dobby and pictures. Very pleased with my Dobby especially since the detail is very much there!

I couldn't believe how great this was. Being a "potterhead" all thing related to the series I want to have. I didn't expect Dobby to be as perfect as his was. The voice is straight from the movie sound track and I think he says about a dozen dif things. VERY much worth the price.

My ol' lady loves Dobby and this was perfect for her for Christmas. Came just how described. Not very loud but it's Dobby's voice and sayings. Looks just like the little guy unlike some other products I have seen of him.

Just adorable. Gave it as a gift to a Harry Potter fan and she loves it. So cute with the different things it says. I tried it before wrapping it and almost kept it for myself. Nice gift. Fast delivery.

Preorder this and received it in April and just opened cause it is a gift for my daughter and I opened it to put it together and the head was broken

Got it for my 7-8 yr old niece for her birthday and she liked it. Her younger sister did too.

Priceless: How I Went Undercover to Rescue the World's Stolen Treasures, by Robert K. Wittman John Shiffman

From Publishers Weekly

Former FBI agent Wittman, who created the agency's Art Crime Team and pursued a lifelong interest in antiques and collectibles, goes undercover to hobnob with infamous art thieves. The ineffective, the stupid, the clever, and the dangerous; Wittman befriends them all, in order to betray them, a fact that causes him a certain amount of angst. Among other challenges are bumbling agency bureaucrats and government turf wars when attempting to recover stolen art abroad. A fatal car accident that Wittman was involved in early in his career shaped his perspective: "I understood that because someone made a mistake in judgment, it didn't make him evil. My newfound ability to see both sides of a situation-to think and feel like the accused-was invaluable." Wittman keeps the narrative interesting, and reveals himself as something of a renegade: "Under the FBI's strict undercover rules, you're only supposed to work one case at a time. I never followed that rule." Keep the lies to a minimum, he advises, and avoid working in your home town. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Robert Wittman, with aide of John Shiffman, weaves a very detailed memoir that is captivating and incredibly informative. This is a must read for anyone interested the FBI's development and interest in recovering stolen art over the decades.Often times people take jobs in the public sector, spend a lifetime providing service and then retire. Everyone can say they left a mark in their own field and implemented changes that made the job for the next person more fluid, simpler or more efficient, but not everyone can say what Wittman has done. Robert Wittman through good fortune and solid investigative work and 'proper salesmanship' in the field slowly built a career not only for himself but a place for others to hopefully follow.Bob Wittman, AKA Bob Clay, undercover Art Dealer for an 'unnamed client' with a hefty checkbook, spent twenty years chasing down leads, setting up meetings in out-of-the-way darkened places, stings and apprehending a long list of people who ventured into Art Crime. Some were dangerous, others were probably more vacuous and obnoxious than dangerous, but still trouble all the same. The best part of the story that unfolds is learning that at one point the FBI gave Bob the leeway needed to see these cases through, recapture lost art and artifacts and take the lead with other Agents to generate success recovering paintings, lost swords, stolen battleflags and other antiquities. The worst part is learning by the end of the book that, like with all bureaucracies who become obsessed with core issues, the FBI supposedly lost interest in drafting a line item budget in their annual reserve policies for Bob's Art Crime Department. Perhaps if more money had been spent on the West Coast, Marion True would've been shut down years prior over at the Getty Center in Los Angeles … but that's another story. In reading the reviews, yes, I always do … I can see that Bob is unfairly taking a lot of flak for a portion of his writing style. Some readers come away a little turned off by what appears to be an oversized ego, but the truth is that when you're the first person to do something, anything you say is likely to come off that way. While Bob wasn't necessarily the first person to come along and do what he did with the FBI, he was likely the first to make a distinguished career out of it, go undercover and build an interest with FBI so they would create entire Departments which then made it able to frame the FBI in a favourable light for the recoveries. Bob Wittman does write a lot of “I did this” and “I did that” sentences, but having to protect other agents parts in cases is a part of it and the material should be read with such consideration. Some people never see the value in history or in art, but will quickly sign the permission slip to let their kids visit a museum for a field trip outing with their elementary school. Common sense can skip a generation (sometimes two) and that's okay. A good number of people understand the significance of what art and antiquities hold, and what it means about our own past.Bob Wittman's narrative of his case files make for good reading, thoughtful consideration and a warning to ne'er-do-wells who think ripping priceless art off the walls of sleepy half-forgotten museums can be profitable. Nine times out of ten you're likely going to be reselling the works to an undercover agent. So, the real lesson is clear – unless you're going to hang the stuff in your own two story home to look at and tell your neighbors it's a fake, decade after decade – don't even think about it.Five Stars. Many thanks to the author for a lifetime of dedicated service as well.

I don't normally write reviews, but this book is worth a special mention. I like learning new information in an entertaining way. This book fulfills that need. We learn about the history of the artifacts that Mr. Wittman went undercover to try to recover, along with the techniques necessary to catch the bad guys. The story takes us to exotic locales and we meet fascinating characters along the way.I think it would enhance the book if it were illustrated. It would be easy to add pictures of the stolen items that Mr. Wittman tried to recover. If you enjoy art history or true crime stories, I recommend that you read this book!

I liked this book for several reasons.1) the authors didn't just write about the theft of paintings, but also of artifacts such as an American Indian headress and historically important Civil War relics.2) not only did they write about the actual crime, but gave important backstory information about each theft and the players involved.3) while Wittman created, promoted and worked as the FBI's art theft division lead, he relates the struggles to keep it vital and working through his tenure touching on the evolution of the bureaucratic mess it has become.4) the Gardner theft case is the underlying theft case in the story, and the authors provide updates on the years of repeated attempts to locate the paintings to no avail.I encourage anyone interested in reading about art crime to give this book a read.

I heard this guy interviewed on NPR and immediately got the book. The heists and investigations he recounts are riveting; many are familiar from news stories. I was astonished at the pathetic security implemented at major galleries around the world. In many cases the thefts were childishly easy, including one escape on a bicycleHis writing stye is very solidly in the "There-I-was up to my neck...." mould, which gets pretty tedious. One chapter begins with " I reflected on all I had a accomplished in my long career......." so he's not short on ego. He could have benefited from a ghost writer but its still a great read.

Former FBI agent Robert Wittman calls on his professional experience, his personal passions, and his unique cultural upbringing to bring to the reader a well crafted account about how a one time salesman joined the FBI in his 30's to becomes the godfather of the FBI Art Team.Every chapter or so tells of a different case he worked, combining the case itself with his own personal history, in order to bring the reader a very personal, although not overly sentimental, account of the crimes he solved and how he solved them. The nice part is that Wittman is honest, to the point, and not afraid to show his own flaws. In other words, he doesn't write himself as a hero worthy of adoration. Instead, he describes his own perspectives, successes, and failures in a way so humble that the reader can't help but identify with him.It is well written. It is easy to read. It is a great story of one man set against the backdrop of cultural history. A fantastic book.

In the initial part of the book, I thought it was merely a vanity piece in which the author touts himself above the storyline. However, that soon evolves into a very well-written description of his successful efforts, through many depictions of real-life Art theft events, to both enlighten the reader on not only the world of fine art but also the immense black market in stolen art works. It is autobiographical, and while he does tout his own talents, the old cliche that "it ain't bragging if you can do it" applies. He was very good at his craft. A very readable book and a page turner, I enjoyed the read and learned a lot about the fine art world.

Great as a reference and location-based suggestion guide. Lonely Planet makes fantastic books for travel and Japan has so much to see that isn't always easy to find that it's a great companion book.

This is a really fantastic book if you enjoy travel books or are planning a trip to Japan. You might try getting a more recently published version if it's out, but for most stuff it's still really good. There's also a section with some Japanese phrases in case you need that, but I'd suggest getting a pocket dictionary with phrases and stuff if you just want it for that.Lonely planet is probably one of my preferred Travel guides.

well done...

It looked like it was a very good quality book. The person who received it for Christmas was thrilled with it.

Disclosure: I have owned and used only one other travel book in my life, so I don't have much to compare this one too. I am simply giving my impressions as a novice travel planner.First off, I actually went to Japan!! This year! I spent 6 weeks in the Kansai region for a language program, and I traveled to Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Tokyo, Shirakawa-go, Takayama, Gifu, Inuyama, Hiroshima, Himeiji, Sekigahara, Mt. Koya, and Mt. Hiei. I got this book before I left, but unfortunately forgot to take it with me. I did read the entire section on the Kansai region and some highlights of Gifu prefecture before I left. So as you might guess, my review will focus heavily on the section of the book featuring the Kansai region. The book is nicely arranged: it starts out with some important things to know, gives some suggested itineraries, and then presents places to visit divided by region. Each region contains a regional map and a list of highlights of the region. It is then divided into cities in the region, giving some history, maps, and general information, before listing the attractions. At the back of the book is a valuable little section called "Japan in Focus". It explains some about the history of Japan, the food, and various aspects of travel that are useful to know (such as explaining ryokan and onsen). I missed this section the first time I went through the book (I thought it was just another region section). I think it would have been much better placed at the beginning of the book.I do agree with some other reviewers; some of the attractions given prominent positions should have been smaller, while some of the attractions shoved into the background should have been brought forward, but I am sure not everyone would agree with me and you can't please everyone. I don't believe that anyone should rely on a single source of information when planning their trip. I used this book to get an idea of what was out there and places I might want to visit, then I did more extensive research online. This book isn't all that big, and that is one of the things I like about it - it is very portable. And for its size, I think that it did an excellent job of choosing which attractions it included. One thing I do concede is that it spent too many pages on Kyoto. Of the number of pages devoted to the Kansai region (home to tons of famous and beautiful historical sites), more than half is focused on Kyoto. I had mixed feelings about Kyoto. It did have many interesting places to visit, but after all the idealistic pictures I saw before going, I had expected a bit more. I think that if I had actually stayed in the city itself rather than take day trips from Osaka, I might have enjoyed it more.Note: Kinkakuji is beautiful, but if you've seen a picture of it, then there isn't really much of a reason to see it in person. It looks just like its pictures - from all angles. It does have nice grounds though. Instead, visit Kiyomizu-dera!If you plan on spending a few nights in the Kansai region, the Kansai Thru Pass is a must. The three day pass (currently 5,000Â¥, also available as a two-day pass for a little less) lets you ride trains and buses unlimitedly (though not JR lines) for approx $17 a day (and the days do not have to be consecutive!). The JR pass is awesome (must be purchase outside of Japan!), but only if you intend to do long distance travel. The book covers the JR pass quite well, but I had to scour the internet to find the KTP. WHY?! To get anywhere in Japan you have to take a train, but for some reason the only train pass that is advertised anywhere is the JR pass, which is a little over $300 for one consecutive week.I loved the Kansai region, but my favorite part of Japan was the Central Honshu area, specifically the areas in the Japanese Alps. Takayama and Shirakawa-go (and Inuyama) were the highlight of my entire 6-week trip. The book's section on this area is not very long, but it contains the good general information, and the information on the bus from Takayama to Shirakawa-go was accurate. One reviewer complains that the book inaccurately represents Japan as a inexpensive place to travel. I agree with them (though $100 is ridiculous), but I can also see why the book might make that statement. Admissions were generally below $5, if you stay in a youth hostel (pretty nice actually) it is about $35 a person, and if you get the train passes you can get all over the place for a relatively cheap price. Don't think that it will be cheaper to travel in Japan than it would be in America, but remember that America also doesn't have nearly the amount of cool stuff to see! My lodging was paid for by the program I was with, but outside of that I spent about $1200 the entire trip (6 weeks or 42 days), which averages a little under $30 a day. This includes all transportation, admittance, food, and souvenirs. The last thing I have to say is that the color really mattered! I didn't think that it was all that important that a travel book have colored pictures (the last one I used didn't), and admittedly the color didn't reveal any missing details, but seeing the images in color just made it seem more real and made me much more excited about going to the places pictured. I also think that it made the maps easier to read.

I lived in Japan for quite a few years, and while I don't need a travel guide to the country anymore I am always curious on how well new travel guides highlight all the madness and charm that can be found there. Consequently, I own a lot of travel guides to Japan. I have also hosted a lot of visitors in Japan, and have learned over the years what works and what doesn't.I admit that I have never been a huge fan of the Lonely Planet series, as their books tend to be just lists of places with tongue-in-cheek humor but not a terrible amount of depth. I have the previous Japan (Country Guide) and this "Discover Japan" volume covers much of the same information, only updated with color photographs and some flash and pizzazz.Right from the start, I had some problems with "Discover Japan." First off, it touts Japan as "one of the cheapest countries in the developed world" which is simply wrong. Japan is incredibly expensive to travel in, with Tokyo being one of the most expensive cities on the planet. Consider that this is a country whose smallest paper currency is equivalent to US $10 (1000 yen), and dollar coins (100 yen) are just chump change. I lived in the Kansai area, which is not as expensive as Tokyo, and even then it was hard to step out your door for less than a hundred dollars a day.Along with this, it says that Visa and Mastercard are "widely excepted," which is completely untrue and a dangerous thing to say. Japan is an almost entirely cash-based society, and I have had to pay for more than one visitor who blindly ordered at a large restaurant just assuming they could pay with their credit card and being shocked when they are told "cash only." Even the ubiquitous convenience stores don't always take plastic, and the cash machines close at normal bank hours so you have to get used to carrying large sums of cash around with you.Next, we are presented with a "Japan's Top 25 Experiences" list, with "Kyoto's Temples and Gardens" being in the number one position. (The photo included is actually the Torii path at Fushimi Inari Shrine, made famous in the film Memoirs of a Geisha but located outside of Kyoto city, so don't look for it there.) Probably my number one advice to visitors is "don't waste too much time in Kyoto."Don't get me wrong, Kyoto has some beautiful areas, but the dreamy city sold to you by guidebooks simply doesn't exist, and those pockets of cherry-blossom lined streets are carefully tucked away in concrete urban sprawl. On top of that, some of Kyoto's most famous buildings, like the Golden Pavilion Kinkakuji, are nothing more than modern replicas of older structures. (The modern Kinkakuji was built in 1955, for example) The nearby Nara Park, on the other hand, with its sprawling wilderness, tame deer than can be hand-fed, and giant Todai-ji temple with the massive Great Buddha statue, is always much more of a crowd pleaser. There is decent coverage of Nara Park in the book, but it deserves more attention than its more famous neighbor Kyoto.Temples and Shrines are very much the focus of "Discover Japan," and almost every regional chapter highlights the local version. This is the book for what we call the "green tea and onsens" traveler who wants to step back into Japan's past that they see in samurai films rather than the modern country. I love shrines and temples probably even more than the next guy, but every visitor I have had to Japan gets "templed-out" pretty quickly, and has more fun standing in the busy street of Dontonbori Osaka with the mechanical signs waving tentacles at you and pumping out steam and every street hawker shouting for your attention. Yet Dotonbori gets little more than a brief paragraph. I was happy to see the Osaka Aquarium get a mention on the "must see" list, but I have to admit that the Osaka Aquarium is nothing compared to the much-larger Okinawa Aquarium which deserves the spot instead. There is a lot more that could be done here. For example, every area of Japan has its own regional food which could have been mentioned, or even cool things sake brewery tours or some of Japan's more unique attractions like the Studio Ghibli museum or the Instant Ramen museum or even some of the amazing roller coasters that Japan is famous for like the terrifying Eejanaika "4-D" roller coaster at Fuji-Q Highland amusement park near the base of Mt. Fuji. From reading this "Discover Japan" guidebook, you get the idea that Japan has not changed for a thousand years and you could expect to encounter shaven-headed men walking around in kimono and geta and white-faced geisha blushing around every corner. The benefits of "Discover Japan" is that the book is really well put-together and visually beautiful. The pages are color coded for easy reference and the full-color pictures make a difference. There is a feature I really enjoyed, where a professional guide from each major region gives their personal "Top Ten" list of what to see. Also, the place names are written in the Japanese language, which is essential as the further you get away from Tokyo the less English-language signs you will see, especially on menus and in train stations. My favorite Japan guidebook remains Gateway to Japan, which is admittedly out-dated and not ideal for a casual tourist but it is by far the most informative. Some of the local city guides, like Old Kyoto are also worth it and I have found some hidden gems there like the Japanese print dealer Nishiharu. If you plan on stepping into the steaming water of an onsen (and you are a fool to travel all the way to Japan and miss out on that!) then you will need How to Take a Japanese Bath. For visual splendor and to get you excited, the Japan (Eyewitness Travel Guides) is a good investment. For me, even though it was well designed this "Discover Japan" book was just lacking too much, and only showed one face of the multi-faceted culture of Japan. Anyone planning a trip is better off picking up a few different books and making their own plans rather than following Lonely Planet's pre-set itineraries and experiences.

Vegan Soul Kitchen: Fresh, Healthy, and Creative African-American Cuisine, by Bryant Terry

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. In this electric, eclectic collection of vegan soul food, West Coast chef Bryant Terry (Grub: Ideas for an Urban Organic Kitchen) manages not only to demystify classic southern cooking, he makes it healthier and more accessible. With a low-key approach, commonly sourced ingredients and recipes worthy of any palette, Terry avoids the didacticism and rigidity of other vegan cookbooks. An impressive amount of information for each recipe, including entertainment recommendations, is also provided. Many dishes will make the list of to-trys: a riff on the traditional Gumbo Z'Herbs that's traditionally eaten during Lent; a roasted potato salad with a parsley-pine nut pesto; and the ubiquitous chow-chow, a vinegar-laced relish that's indispensable with greens. Terry's simplicity is also commendable: a side of wilted swiss chard and spinach with lemon-tahini dressing is a healthier, creamier alternative to Caesar salad, and his Simple Seared Green Beans are a terrific way to enjoy the vegetable at its peak; classic treats like peach cobbler and mint juleps are also included. Though something of a Pyrrhic victory-a terrific and tasty collection of healthy Southern variations unfortunately relegated to the "vegan" ghetto-Terry's latest will make a happy discovery for cooks of any dietary persuasions. Alice Waters “Bryant Terry knows that good food should be an everyday right and not a privilege. This book is full of easy, tasty, seasonal recipes that also happen to be vegan and affordable!” John Robbins, author The Food Revolution and Diet for a New America “Do you think a commitment to healthy eating means enduring bland and boring food? One of those rare cookbooks I look forward to cooking through from cover to cover.” Van Jones, author of the New York Times bestseller The Green Collar Economy “Much more than a cookbook, Vegan Soul Kitchen reads like a rich gumbo of the African American experience, a history lesson with a mouthwatering twist. From reaching back to our heritage as stewards of the earth to offering modern recipes, music suggestions and original poetry, Bryant brings together a portrait of a people as well as a movement (food justice) that is poised to save our health, green our communities, and sustain the earth. Bryant knows the shortest way to people’s hearts is through their stomachs.” Peter Berley, author of The Flexitarian Table “Bryant Terry’s warm hearted, soulful dishes shout out to you and me with crackling, lip smacking goodness. His fresh and sassy way at the stove puts meat on the bones of the very plants that are sure to sustain us for generations to come.“ Annemarie Colbin, Ph.D., founder, The Natural Gourmet Institute for Health and Culinary Arts, author of The Whole-Food Guide to Strong Bones “Bryant has written a very creative, original, and musical cookbook. If you’re new to this cuisine, Bryant Terry’s recipes will open your world; if you’re looking for a twist, prepare to be amazed. All I can say is WOW! Thank you Bryant.” Robin D. G. Kelley, author of Freedom Dreams: The Black Radical Imagination “Bryant Terry transforms age-old black culinary traditions into what soul food ought to be—food that sustain our bodies, our earth, our sense of community, and our desire for the delicious. For the naysayers who resist the audacity of okra or the soft power of tofu, Vegan Soul Kitchen is the new manifesto that cries out, Yes We Can give up meat and enjoy gastronomic nirvana.” Alondra Nelson, Yale University, author of Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Politics of Race and Health “A pioneer of the East Coast food justice movement, now hailing from the West Coast home of progressive food politics—where the Black Panther Party’s Free Breakfast for Children program made nutrition a key ingredient of social transformation and where Alice Waters started an organic revolution—who else but Chef Bryant Terry could have brought us the finger-licking, ethical eats in Vegan Soul Kitchen. At a moment when food can harm as well as heal, he has ingeniously re-imagined soul food by going back to the roots and back to the land. Recipes paired with vintage R&B, praise songs and poetry remind us that African diasporic cuisine has always been food for living and a total sensory experience.” Publishers Weekly (starred web exclusive), 2/2/09 “West Coast chef Bryant Terry manages not only to demystify classic southern cooking, he makes it healthier and more accessible…Terry's latest will make a happy discovery for cooks of any dietary persuasions.” Detroit Metro Times, 3/11/09 “Will convince you that soul food can be delicious without the animal fats and sodium associated with it.” EbonyJet.com, 3/20/09 “Bryant teaches us that we can eat healthy and soulful, while creating just and sustainable food systems.” The Root, 3/25/09 “At a time when more people are trying to eat well on a budget, the timing of [Terry’s] contribution couldn’t be better. Not only does Vegan Soul Kitchen prove that vegan soul food isn’t an oxymoron, it shows what’s possible for cooks who want to align their souls with their appetites, feeding their bellies along with their spirits.” Edible Memphis, Spring 2009 “Bryant proves that soul food can be healthy and worthy of anyone’s (not just the vegans’) table. Not a Vegan? Pick up the book anyway. It’s loaded with 150 easy, flavorful recipes that are economical and healthy.” East Bay Express, 4/22/09 “Terry draws upon his roots to create seasonal, healthy, animal-free alternatives to butter-drenched soul-food staples. Unlike many vegan cookbooks that call for hard-to-find specialty ingredients, most of Terry's recipes require a few simple ingredients that can be purchased at farmers markets and mainstream grocery stores.” VegNews, 5/2/09 “With 150 recipes, this can’t miss classic will have you kissing your Collard Confetti without missing a beat.” GoodCooking.com, 5/11/09 “This is a fun book that is well written with good recipes to boot. It will make a nice addition to your cookbook collection as long as Grandma doesn't swipe it to try a few recipes for herself!” South Florida Sun Sentinel, 5/20/09 “Terry's recipes stand on their own. They're not about what's missing. They are complete, packed with flavor, color and texture: pan-fried grit cakes are served with caramelized spring onions, roasted sweet potato puree gets its creamy texture from coconut milk.” New York Times, 5/28/09 “This young food activist makes Southern cooking healthy and cool.” Uptown Social, 5/26/09 “Vegan is not typically associated with soul food, but Oakland-based eco chef Bryant Terry is not your typical southern son. His recipes will satisfy part-time vegetarians and full-time soul food fanatics who require flavorful meals that combine local ingredients in quirky and tasty ways.” Los Angeles Sentinel, 5/21/09 “With obesity and high rates of diabetes and other health issues affecting African-Americans, Vegan Soul Kitchen is right on time.” Slashfood, 7/8/09 “For vegans looking for new and innovative directions to take their cooking, this is an excellent resource. And for non-vegans who are looking for ways to introduce vegetables into their diet—in a way that is worlds removed from the stereotypes (bland, piously healthy) that bedevil vegan cooking—this is also a worthwhile investment.” Philadelphia Daily News, 7/23/09 “Vegan Soul Kitchen brings the flavor without the fat. It's a collection of fresh fruit-, vegetable- and nut-based meals which, while classified as ‘vegan,’ are also traditional family recipes with a hip and healthy flair.” Clean Eating, Sept/Oct 2009 “You won’t miss the meat or butter here! Bryant Terry reinterprets popular dishes in an animal-free yet surprisingly rich way that still manages to capture the complex flavors of soul food’s African, Native American, Caribbean and American roots.” Edible Ojai, Summer 2009 “[Terry] has come along to dispel the misconception that traditional Southern cooking consists primarily of over-cooked collard greens and foods saturated with animal fats.” YourVeganMom.com, 7/22/09 “This is the sort of cookbook that you will want to read from cover to cover. With its emphasis on healthy whole foods updates of soul food classics, you will also want to do some cooking.” Eau Claire Leader-Telegram, 8/11/09 “With 150 creative recipes, Terry almost makes you believe soul food can be made without bacon grease.” ...

I love Bryant Terry, but he can't seem to make a simple recipe! They taste delicious, but I secretly think he may be trying to make every step as convoluted and difficult as possible. ;) A lot of the time I take shortcuts, and just between you and me, they stand up well to this sort of treatment - so don't be afraid to take some of the fussiness out! Maybe the final result is a little less delicious, but who's going to know? It will be our secret. :)

I really should have took into account the previous reviews as this book is for individuals who have tons of time to scour markets for ingredients. basically many of these recipes are a little too fancy for my style of cooking. surely not my definition of soul food. It's not a horrible book but I'll probably only mark 3 maybe 4 recipes out the book. I say take it out at your local library before making the purchase.

This was my first Bryant Terry Cook books. I bought it because I was intrigued by the concept of re-mixed, veganized Soul Food. At the time I didn’t know all that much about Soul Food as a cuisine or culinary tradition but I fell in love with the book anyway. Over the years I’ve become more familiar with the Southern cooking traditions, and that continued familiarity only makes me love this book more. Yes, it isn’t a book full of traditional soul recipes, yes some of them can be laborious or time consuming, yes some of them use ingredients that are probably not common to your pantry - but can easily be found in a speciality shop or via Amazon - and yes, oil, salt, sugar, flour and soy are all used throughout the book - but the recipes speak for themselves. Not every single one Is stand out, but many of them are, and many of them provide unique flavor profiles or textures. A lot of them combine foods I wouldn’t normally think to combine leading to really interesting and satisfying results. Despite some of the ‘draw-backs’ mentioned above, this book really gets me excited about cooking, and I love the journey that Terry takes you on. His introductions provide a lot of really interesting information, his passion for cooking and culture is apparent, and you gotta love his music selection. There’s just something about this book that makes me smile, like an old friend. The soul in the food may not be traditional, but the soul in the book is palpable and I appreciate the time and energy Terry put into this book.My only real complaints are that I don’t particularly care for the layout which is a little busy for my taste. I also hate when recipes are split across two pages. Also I wish there had been more pictures. There are some black and white photos throughout the book, and then an insert of a few color photos in the center - none of which really do the food justice. Another thing some may wish to consider before purchasing the book is that no nutritional information is given for the recipes.I wish I had the time to make more of the recipes but so far these are the ones I’ve gotten around to,Citrus Collards with Raisin Redux - Loved itUncle Don’s Double Mustard Greens and Roasted Yam Soup - Loved itOpen-Faced BBQ Tempeh Sandwich with Carrot Cayenne Coleslaw - Loved itLavender Lemonade - Loved itRoasted Plantain Pieces with Garlic Lime Dipping Sauce - Loved itBaked Sweet Potato Fries with Ginger Peanut Dipping Sauce - Loved itGarlicky Lima Bean Spread - Loved itGarlicky Creamy Vinaigrette - Loved itStraightforward Coleslaw - Loved itCarrot Cayenne Coleslaw - Loved itChilled Citrus Broccoli Salad - Loved itRoasted Red Potato Salad with Parsley Pine Nut Pesto - Loved itChilled and Grilled Okra, Corn, and Heirloom Tomato Salad - Loved itGumbo Z - Loved itSimple Seared Green Beans - Loved itGrilled Asparagus with Rosemary Sea Salt - Loved itGrilled Corn on the Cob with Spicy Garlic Miso DressingSauteed Jalapeno Corn - Loved itSweet Coconut Ginger Creamed Corn - Loved itRoasted Root Vegetables with Roasted Garlic Lime Dipping Sauce - Pretty goodRoasted Sweet Potato Puree with Coconut Milk - Loved itWilted Swiss Chard and Spinach with Lemon Tahini Dressing - Loved itNot Too Dirty Rice - Loved itBaked BBQ Black Eyed Peas - Loved itBlackened Tofu Slabs with Succotash Salsa - Loved itAs much as I love this book I probably would not recommend it to the new vegan, nor would I recommend it to anyone who isn’t an adventurous eater. For those seasoned vegans who love to cook and love a good culinary journey however I think this would be a welcome addition to your collection.

This book scratches that itch I get sometimes for the fried stuff with gravy on it I grew up on. To me, it's kind of two good books smashed together. There's the recipes and then there's Bryant Terry's philosophy on wasting little, buying locally and eating seasonally. My favorite recipes so far are the Gumbo Z, creole hoppin' jean, citrus collards, smothered seitan medallions, and mixed mushroom gravy. They are all seriously good, beautifully-seasoned, and will make you glad you spent the time making them, which is good, because you will spend some time making them. The best recipes in this book are fairly complex and time-consuming, but it's hard to argue with a recipe for collard greens that my kids like.

As a West Coaster currently living on the East Coast, this book was my basic introduction to Southern food. Terry has done a good job converting this person to eat these foods more often. What I like:The format of the book is super organized, which really aids the reader in finding recipes without a lot of flipping. The Table of Contents lists everything with page numbers and the index is handy when just looking up an ingredient. Each recipe comes with a suggestion of certain music and a story. It gets people into certain frames of mind, which elevated the meal from food into an experience. There are also a lot of notes that range from practical to interesting facts. The food is really delicious with a lot of bold flavors and interesting textures. Bonus points for the chapter on condiments, sauces, preserves, and pickles. I actually started growing my own habanero peppers for the hot pepper sauce, which is really good with almost anything (unless you're a person who doesn't like spicy)."Waste" from one recipe is turned into another. For example, the stems from the collards in the recipe for Citrus Collards with Raisins Redux, but are used strictly for the Collard Confetti (and can be applied to *any* leafy green in which the stems are removed).Recipes range from super simple to complex so there's always an occasion to cook something from this book. What I didn't like:Some of the recipes need other recipes to be completed. I really don't mind extra cooking most of the time, but those types of recipes always get lowered on my priority list of ones to try simply because of the time factor making an extra dish involves. I have to say that in addition to the extra steps involved, these are some of my least favorite dishes in terms of the flavor.Being new to this type of cuisine, I would have appreciated more notes on which dishes go really well with others. There are a few times he makes this suggestion, but I just wish it happened more frequently. The over-reliance on coconut oil to fry things. I realize the perception is Southern Food = Fried Food, but with healthy in the title I was hoping for an alternative step on a recipe. For example, have the original recipe in tact with the frying, but also note that if you want to bake something, this temperature for this amount of time should be sufficient. Most of us that would rather bake than fry know the results aren't going to be as crispy and flavor-packed, but we can live with it as an everyday dish and decide to fry once in awhile. :)***Things to note:If you live in an area that does not have specialty markets, some of the ingredients may be hard to find, such as miso and kombu.

Once you start the series you must read all of them. I love the series. She is a wonderful writer. Once the best around. Anyone who has never read anything by Janette Oke has never anything by this author has really missed a treat. She writes so real and you really don't want to put the book down. You get so hooked on her series. If you have read books by Karen Kingsbury then you will love Janette Oke also. They are both wonderful writers. They are the best.

Wow! I had a difficult time putting this book down long enough to get anything else done...lol!What an amazing author. I've read so many of her books...and if you'll excuse me...I'm on to the next!

All of her books are amazing!

Not the most thrilling tale but definitely a must read to finish the series. I love learning about this fictional family!

Each book in this series is so good I would order the next one the second I was finished with the current one. I stayed up way to late several nights because I'd be so lost in the story.

I believe this is one of her best books. I mean this whole prairie legacy series was wonderful! I love how it shows Virginias healing and then how she learns to love again. A wonderful CLEAN sweet romance. I suggest reading them in order too :) enjoy!

One of my favorite stories. The book is so much better than the movie. Just love the characters.

Excellent left me wanting to know what's life has in store for them. The characters in these books you fall in love with them as their journey with faith keeps them string no matter what obstacles they come across.
