If you're looking for an expert guide to every nut and bolt of the Entity Framework (EF) - I'm not sure this is the book.If you're looking for a quickstart, I think this is a decent book. But, anybody can draw a model without a book. The challenge is DOING something with that model, and that takes a little more than a 1 page MSDN tutorial.The challenge is that if you're going to talk about EF, there are hundreds of semi-directly related topics. LINQ, Entity Queries, WCF, WPF, Silverlight, MVC. There is no way any book could cover everything you can do with EF.However, this book covers all the core topics very well. As someone relatively new to LINQ, WCF, and MVC, it was great. As someone who is familiar with databinding, but never really used it (because it's been mostly awful), it was nice to get into it.So, 5 stars might be a little high, but this book did everything I wanted:1. It gave enough detail to help me start reasonably quick.2. It covered all the related technologies with enough depth that I don't have to buy a LINQ book, WPF book, etc, just to use EF.So, if you're newer to the 2010 technologies, I think this is a great place to start.

Entity Framework 4 is unarguably the fastest evolving data provider of any that Microsoft has released to this point. This makes it a moving target and books released on the subject are practically out of date by the time they're released. Despite that, I think Ms. Lerman's done an excellent job with this title and has released quite a bit of supplementary material on the MSDN sites and her blog [...] as well.While the text is aimed at those familiar with .NET programming and not necessarily EF (as the book states), readers should have a solid understanding of ADO.NET. Those who have previous experience with LINQ to SQL classes will definitely benefit in understanding the contents of this book. Despite some reviews, I found the book well organized considering the depth of the topics. It's replete with code samples and the explanations of the Entity Data Model are some of the most thorough I've found in any book on this subject.Where I think the book falls short is in its attempts to cover the building of applications using EF across multiple platform types, such as WCF, Windows Forms and web applications. I think O'Reilly's better option here would have been to slim the book back to core topics and issue separate editions to cover these different platforms.Unlike most reviewers, I did not feel it would serve as much as a shelf reference as its adjunct books, Programming Entity Framework: Code First and Programming Entity Framework: DbContext. However, it is still a fine book for training intermediate to advanced .NET developers as a readable primer, and is about the best of its kind currently available on the markets.

This is probably one of THE best technical books I've come across in recent years. It compares very favorably to the old UNIX/Internet related books O'Reilly started out with that were known for covering a subject both broadly and deeply. This has been my one and only reference for working with the Entity Framework and its answered pretty much every question I've had. It even has good coverage of under-the-hood and low level features which most books gloss over or skip entirely. I'm a software architect who has built ORM systems from scratch, Microsoft's Entity Framework is far from perfect but this book is about as good as one could possibly expect.

I initially tried to learn EF on my own using online tutorials and the MSDN forum. I realized very quickly that the tutorials were too superficial and I needed a strong foundation in EF before using it on production projects. This book provided all the foundation I needed to be able to quickly work with EF so that I could program against simple POCO's classes and let EF handle the communication with the backend. You can do this in such a way that you have complete separation of concerns so if you ever decide to switch from EF to another ORM product or ORM methodology -- your code remains unaffected. If you desire, you can control the interaction with the backend.This book focuses on creating an EDMX model and working with that model and the XML behind the model. I, on the other hand, was interested only in Code First with and without existing databases (existing databases are 99% of my world). But the insight in how EF works made learning Code First a breeze. The book does have chapters that show you how to let EF to generate and work with POCO classes. However, I prefer to create my classes (domain model) myself.In Code First, your POCO classes are the model. But whether you create an EDMX model or choose the Code First approach, once you compile and run the project everything that follows is exactly the same. It is important to learn the concepts in this book so you understand the implications of what you are doing and make the right choices in Code First.

Not only does this book cover explain Entity Framework from a programming point of view, but it pulls back the covers to explain the many options available. The many comprehensive real life examples that Julie Lerman provide make this a programming Bible for Entity Framework. Whether you are using views, stored procedures, user defined functions, the T4 generator, Entities or POCO's, Julie Lerman can help you come up with the solution that works for you.

This is a book worth your time, written by a retired career Congressional staff insider. Author Mike Lofgren has unique and critical insight into the workings of both the Republican Party and the Congress. And his take on both are depressing, bordering on frightening. He takes no prisoners with harsh judgement of the GOP, the Democrats, and corporate America. According to him, the Republicans are essentially shills for big business and the Democrats are just plain hapless.In a nutshell, the Deep State as Lofgren describes it is a combination of elected and appointed members of the legislative and executive branches; and corporate insiders, especially the military-industrial complex, Wall Street, and Silicon Valley. Together, fueled by enormous amounts of money, they effectively control the country, regardless of which party is in power or the wishes of the electorate. Lofgren believes the ‘Deep State’ in its current form began with the Manhattan Project during WW II. He describes the country’s situation in detail with specific examples. He points out the main dangers the country faces due to the Deep State, and finally, he lays out specific corrections he believes the country must take to save itself.Readers will have widely different views about Lofgren's thesis based on their perspective. I have a few observations. First, I think he's mostly right. But I wonder why he played the game for so long and only vents his concerns after retirement. He could be viewed as quite hypocritical. At times, his rhetoric is quite shrill (over the top). Also, although the 'Deep State' might be reaching new heights of control and manipulation, I do not think this is a very new phenomenon. Think about the Railroad Barons of the 19th century and many other examples. People with vast resources have always wielded great power for possible mischief. That's not to say we should not heed Lofgren's warning and strive to retake our democracy.Mike Lofgren says the worst and most vexing problem we face is money in politics and the ills exacerbated by the ‘Citizens Untited’ Supreme Court decision. He’s exactly right. His suggested solutions, while mostly right on target, are daunting. In the current state, its difficult to see how we get there.This is a book that should cause people to think and act. I highly recommend it.

I found this book to contain a tightly woven description of the U.S. government, and its shadow state, from the point of view of a recent insider. It raised these questions among others for me: How much of this commentary reflects the possible resentment of a former employee? If any of it is a reflection of one man's disillusion and "sour apples," does that mean that the content is any the less somewhat reliable, and to what degree?And lastly, if and how to react to the theme of the book, "You thought our government is broken? Well, the it's worse than that! --- it's all a stage play, with the real decisions being made behind the scenes." The Deep State is a disturbing, fascinating read that is tough to put down until its last page. Its content invites examination of our political and governmental practices in light of damning propositions that we have indeed lost our democracy, flawed though it may have been; We are no longer guided by our Constitution and its principles. Nor do we seem able and willing to grasp the failure of our institutions of justice and law, of public education, and of fair participation in our own economy. Lastly, in checking a fair portion of the book's sources and the author's background, I have come to believe that this is an "expose" that we would all do well to heed.I recommend The Deep State to all thinking Americans.

First, I would ignore all the one star reviews that appear to be the work of disinformation trolls or those who have no read the book. Especially those that try to critique the author of being part of some "liberal" conspiracy, which is ironic since he started off in DC as a republican during the Reagan years. Simply put, this book is a MUST READ for every American. It clearly spells out how the Deep State works: A confluence of the military industrial complex, Wall Street, corporate America, and how these forces have slowly hijacked the US Government to serve the elite at the expense of the American people and our national security. The whole point of the Deep State is that it is NON PARTISAN. It transcends democrats and republicans and you simply have to follow the money. Anyone who thinks that Donald Trump is not part of this - after appointing appointing a cabinet of billionaires and generals, de-regulating Wall Street even further, and driving up the military budget while threatening to curtail what little social services we have left, have clearly drunk the Kool-Aid. You don't get to be President unless you have the tacit support of the Deep State.

Laughable. I got suckered because us Conservatives and Libertarians are more tuned in to the implications of the book's title. Downloaded the audio/kindle to listen and read. Hooked my headphones in and began a long bike ride. Shortly in Lofgren credits ...wait for it... Elisabeth Warren for calling out the Deep State. LOL. I nearly fell off my Cannondale. I thought maybe it was a joke and I missed the tone. I kept listening. In a few more minutes, he basically labels the "TEA Party" as deplorables. As I kept listening I kept cutting him some slack. Finally, I couldn't take his bias anymore and feared I might crash from jawdropping leftist bias. Lofgren's answer the Deep State seems to be more effective Democrats implementing an even deeper more politically correct Deep State. The book seems like a psyop written to quell concerns about the real Deep State, which is mainly a socialists agenda to enslave the world.

I'm glad that Kotlin is rising in popularity, especially with it's use for Android development. This book does a good job of introducing the Kotlin programming language as it takes you through the course of developing an Android app. If you're an Android developer and you want to start developing with Kotlin, this book is not a bad place to start (since it's only one of very few Android/Kotlin tutorials available at the time of this writing). However, this book seemed like it was rushed to be published because it felt quite unorganized throughout. It seems like the author didn't care to explain a lot of what is being shown in the book in order to make it easier for himself. I really think this book will get better in the next few editions down the line.

There's a distinct shortage of good reference material on Kotlin, and I would have to include this unfinished little manual. There are so many profound grammatical errors (to be found on just about EVERY page) that it's truly difficult to take this book seriously. The content lacks organization and is extremely brief, in many areas, simply regurgitating the same one line explanations that can be found in the online documentation.

Highly recommended for Kotlin beginners with some knowledge of Java and Android Studio. I follow the book as well as the free digital edition sent by Antonio (with updated texts), so far so good, and the examples worked! The book project is the same "Weather Project" in Google Java Android Studio Development course, which was much 'painful' compared to this Kotlin version.Only regret is it is still much OO style, little Functional programming except (Chap13) Lambda Expression, none on Monadic style with Kotlin.

This book tells the story of Al-Andalus from the first penetration of Muslims in the 8th century til the final exile roughly 800 years later. In recent years, for modern reasons, Al-Andalus has been held up as a society of great religious tolerance that led to a great cultural flowering which was squelched when monomaniacal Christian kings re-conquered the Iberian peninsula and set everything back to the dark ages. I always felt this view was a little too rose-colored. This book comes from the same perspective and, in a neutral manner, looks at the whole picture, which is one of constant raiding and skirmishing and divisions and alliances within and between communities and cultures and sects. There was a great deal of realpolitik involved in the attitude of the leaders of one society toward others within it and without. Religiosity was often set aside, but not always. There was cruelty on both sides and magnanimity on both sides. Trust was provisional and short-lived everywhere. Equality was in short supply, especially as compared to slavery which was as endemic and vital to the economy of al-Andalus as the antebellum south of the United States.The history is told in a straightforward chronological fashion. The emphasis is on the geopolitical, i.e., who was in charge of what territory at any given time, and how the boundaries changed as time went on, which was, of course, through military conflict, conquest and defeat. As it is the story of Al-Andalus, it is mainly told from the perspective of the Muslim rulers, with the Christians very much in the background until the 15th century.My only negative response to the book is that it is a bit tedious to read. In its 400+ pages, there must be over 100 battles and over 200 rulers or pretenders. Every geopolitical development gets a couple of pages and then we move on to the next. It's a little repetitious, although I don't know how to tell it any other way in that amount of pages. If you've read any of John Julius Norwich's histories, say of Venice or Sicily, this is similar but a little drier. It's very non-academic and devoid of footnotes and endnotes, fbow. Also, for this Western reader, the author's fidelity to Arabic naming was a further obstacle, if you like to read fast, as I do; the Arabic rulers' names have a lot of similarity and I often had to slow down to be sure which of them the author was referring to at a given moment.

Not bad; scholarly + well written. But the author does not give proper sources for his information. For example, page 278 mentions that, the Jewish thinker Maimonides had feigned conversion to Islam, to emigrate to Fez. Where is Professor Catlos's source? I asked my Rabbi, an expert in Jewish history, a Rosh Kollel in a prestigious yeshiva, author of innumerable books, if that's true. The answer was, paraphrasing: 'It could be, but he never heard that'. Enjoyed reading this though, and was able to improve my vocabulary. Looked up the words animism, chancery, minaret, palatine, liminal, palanquin and dromedary.

I knew little about the Islamic period of Iberian history, and was much interested in learning what life was life. This book addressed my curiosity but spent much more time reviewing all the struggles for power, inter-tribal conflicts. Great to learn about the alliances between Christian and Muslim kingdoms, the accomplishments in economic development achieved during this era and the modernizing influence of Spain (Córdoba, in particular) that helped bring the rest of the Western World out of the "Dark Ages." Although Portugal is largely overlooked, it is a worthwhile read for anyone interested in Spanish history.

Great history of early medieval Spain and the complex interrelationship between Muslims and Christians. What I also found fascinating was the military career of El Cid.

Considering how for literally hundreds of years Spain was a changing patchwork kingdoms and shifting alliances, It would be quite the understatement to say that the history of Muslim Spain and the Reconquista is not easy to get a handle on. This is why I personally found Catlos to be such an absolute delight of a read. While his Middle Ages-spanning work reveals a time and land that is undeniably and fascinatingly complicated above all else, he does so in a clear narrative that makes this formative period on the Iberian Pensinsula easily accessible for anyone who wants to know more.

A good place to start if interested in understanding who was who and in identifying their most significant works. According to this author there was no coherent set of ideas governing individual artists. He supports the architects' argument that there was no modern style. Was modernism just a break with the past?

This is a good quick introduction. A good supplement to a course on modernist literature or art. What is important is that it shows the Modernist project as something that encompassed art, literature, psychology, science, and politics--in other words, it contextualizes the movement.

This is not an introduction. It is the author talking with himself, enjoying his erudition, employing a plethora of abstruse and arcane allusions, all of which accomplishes nothing other than to remind the reader that being educated and being able to educate are two very different things.

Excellent intro to a complicated subject. Much superior to other more well-known -- and wordier -- attempts at explaining modernism.

They need "A Very Short Introduction" for this VSI! Turgid and prolix..I gave up 3/4 way through.

Very good comprehensive introduction to Modernism. Only not too helpful for me at the moment becasue I was looking for something more specific. Butler has this wonderful ability to make connections between the arts. He constructs a bigger picture of the Modern movement where many forms are interlinked, influenced and informed one another. He also has a longer book Early Modernism that might be more helpful if you are looking for indepth and moe detailed discussions.

A super fast introductory read, this handy tool helps one understand the salient features of an era.

I'm not really a fan of small books with tight binding because it makes it difficult to highlight and annotate on them. Personally, I wont buy from this series again. But remember my review reflects my preference for books. If you like a light compact book that you can put in a jacket pocket then this is an excellent choice for you. Great for a quick read if you ride on public transportation and you don't feel like carrying a big book around
