Ngugi wa Thiong’o is one of Kenya's most famous writers. Over the years, I've read a few of his novels -- The River Between (1965), Petals of Blood (1977), and the masterful Wizard of the Crow (2006). Both of the earlier two novels are set against the backdrop of the Mau Mau rebellion, an uprising against the British colonial government by Kenyans - mostly Kikuyus - in the 1950s.Dreams in a Time of War: A Childhood Memoir, tells the story of Thiong'o's early life, through the mid-1950s when he was admitted to high school. As with several of Thiong'o's novels, this story also takes place against the backdrop of Mau Mau. It's a fascinating account, and it balances the personal with the political. On the personal side, Thiong'o tells of growing up in a polygamous household and of his mother's efforts to get him to school. His mother and father split when he was a child, and he becomes the scribe to his maternal grandfather. He gives an account -- the first I've read -- of going through the circumcision ceremony, the rite of passage that makes him a man.At the same time, he describes the political excitement and tension of the time. In the course of Mau Mau, his uncle goes to the mountains to fight, and Thiong'o himself is detained by colonial police on the way home from a religious meeting. The political and the personal intersect repeatedly. With little access to newspapers - and those filtered by colonial authorities - he and his friends rely on semi-informed and highly creative informants: "Ngandi, like some of his audience, has to read between the lines of the settler-owned newspapers and government radio. But he enriches what he gleans here and there with rich creative interpretation." Still, as Thiong'o underlines, "Perhaps it is myth as much as fact that keeps dreams alive in times of war."This is a beautiful homage to a mother's commitment to education, as well as a view to growing up in a time of great political upheaval. I listened to the unabridged audiobook, narrated by Hakeen Kae-Kazim. I highly recommend the book, the audiobook, and Thiong'o's other work, especially Wizard of the Crow.

Ngugi's latest publication Dreams in a Time of War: A Childhood Memoir is a treasure-house of childhood memories. It is an informative and didactic memoir written with the intent of taking the reader down memory lane. The story of Ngugi's travails through life lends credence to the wise saying that epic characters are often associated with humble beginnings. The narrator begins his narrative precisely where stories of epic heroes always begin: with the place, time, and circumstances of his birth: "I was born in 1938, under the shadow of war, the Second World War, to Thiong'o wa Nducu, my father , and Wanjiku wa Ngugi, my mother. I don't know where I ranked, in terms of years, among the twenty-four children of my father and his four wives, but I was the fifth child of my mother's house"(9). Having been born in a polygamous family with too many mouths to feed, young Ngugi often suffered pangs of hunger : "I had not had lunch that day, and my tummy had forgotten the porridge I had gobbled that morning before the six-mile run to Kinyogori Intermediate School"(3). Not only did the youngster have to dispense with food on occasion; he had to walk an incredibly long distance each day in quest of the knowledge he so badly needed to improve his lot in life. Knowing who Ngugi is today, it is shocking to learn that he never owned a pair of shoes until he was admitted into high school: "I had walked barefoot all my life" (245).Ngugi's adolescent years were formative characterized by rites of passage: "My grandmother turned to me: `And my husband here? She called me husband because I was named after my grandfather... The idea of circumcision was very far from my mind. But for some reason she would not let the matter go, and a few days later she brought up the subject, reiterating that Ndungu who was my age, could not become a man and leave me behind a boy"(163). The initiation school sometimes referred to as an unsafe ordeal by westerners is highly regarded in Kenya and beyond. Circumcision is a practice whereby the loose skin at the end of a boy's penis is cut off. The initiation school is viewed as a nursery where moral rectitude is inculcated in the minds of initiates who are taught life skills such as courage, resilience, stoicism, creative thinking, and respect. Most importantly, rite of passage is perceived as a coming of age, an inevitable bridge between boyhood and manhood. As Ngugi puts it, rite of passage was not only "initiations from one phase of life to another but also forms of social education" (83).Indeed, Ngugi portrays himself as a cultural hybrid, having undergone initiation in the indigenous and western senses of the word: "One evening, my mother asked me: `Would you like to go to school?' It was in 1947" (49). This moment marks the genesis of Ngugi's initiation into the White man's school, a school that had tonic effect on the growing youngster: "...at lunchtime when other kids took out the food they had brought... to eat during the midday break...I would often pretend that I was going someplace, but really it was to any shade of a tree or cover of a bush, far from the other kids, just to read a book, any book..."(3)Dreams in a Time of War: A Childhood Memoir is homage paid to Kenya's nationalists, many of whom paid the supreme price in the struggle to free their country from British colonial yoke. Ngugi sheds ample light on the seminal role played by the Mau Mau in the liberation struggle: "The guerillas are under strict orders from Marshall Dedan Kimathi not to kill at random. The guerrillas could not survive without support from the people... there were hundreds of others who did not survive, butchered by the colonial forces... "(182. The historical significance of Ngugi's memoir resides not only in allusions to historical figures like Dedan Kimathi, Jomo Kenyatta, Eisenhower, Hitler, and Winston Churchill among others but also to the question of settler colonialism in Kenya and the irksome land misappropriation that surfaced in its wake: "I had learned that down beyond the forest was the Limuru Township and across the railway line, white-owned plantations where my older siblings went to pick tea leaves for pay...I had learned that our land was not quite our land; that we were now ahoi, tenants at will. How did we come to be ahoi on our own land?"(10). Western imperialism in Kenya went farther than mere land grabbing. The colonialists owned means of production as this example indicates: "...white people owned the tea plantation on the other side of the railway, and I had even heard that there were white owners of the Limuru Bata Shoe factory..." (39) Thus, this book is a lampoon on how Europe underdeveloped Kenya. It is a rap on colonialism and its attendant ills. Ngugi believes that the disintegration of the African continent began at the infamous Berlin Conference of 1885 "that divided Africa into spheres of influence among European powers..." (15)Dreams in a Time of War: A Childhood Memoir is captivating in several respects but the quality that grips the reader's attention is the writer's continual recourse to the literary device of intertextuality. He resorts to cross-references in a bid to prove salient points. For example, on page 111, Ngugi refers to Theodore Natsoulas' article " The Rise and Fall of the Kikuyu Karing'a Education Association in Kenya, 1929-1952" published in the Journal of African and Asian Studies 23.3-4(1988):220-21 to underscore the colluding role played by Western religions in the cultural alienation of Africans. In the same vein, he alludes to Winston Churchill's My African Journey (1968) on page 14 to lambaste the cantankerous role the British played in the dismemberment of Kenya. Ngugi takes the West to task for the spoliation of Africa, particularly the theft of Africa's lands. On page 227 he refers to Stevenson's Treasure Island, a book that counts among his favorites in his adolescence. Charles Dicken's Great Expectations (p.219) belongs in this category as well.Clash of cultures is a leitmotif in Dreams in a Time of War: A Childhood Memoir. Ngugi discusses the uneasy cohabitation of modernism with tradition in Kenya as follows: "Baba Mukuru's house was antithetical to Kahahu's. He was as confident in the ways of his ancestors as Kahahu was in the ways of his Christian ancestors. For him, tradition was sacrosanct." (82-3) A little further, the narrator sheds more light: "Baba Mukuru poured a libation for the ancestral spirits that they might be with the living and the newly born" (83). Cultural hybridity is manifest throughout the book in the form of indigenization of language. Ngugi straddles the linguistic divide by drawing from both his indigenous language and English as this example illustrates: "It was the main hut not because of its size but because it was set apart and equidistant from the other four. It was called a thingira."(9) Code-switching enables him to express cultural specificities. Sometimes, Ngugi employs vernacular language words in order to underline otherness: "These must the white spirits, the mizungu, and this, the Nairobi had heard about as having sprung from the bowels of the earth" (14). In his attempt to transpose the speech mannerisms of Kenyans into written English he resorts to the alternate use of languages, including everything from the introduction of a single unassimilated word up to a complete sentence as this other example shows: "... which he Gikuyunized as mburaribuu, kaniga gaka, mbaga ino, and which he used freely to address any of his children at whom he was angry" (18). Quite apart from Africanisms, Ngugi makes abundant use of proverbial expressions to translate the worldview of the Kikuyu into a European language: "... I comfort myself, because I don't have to tell my stories to listeners eager to eat from the palm of my hand" (232). Another insightful maxim used by Ngugi for the purpose of translating Gikuyu sagacity into English is: "The Gikuyu have a saying that out of the same womb come both a killer and a healer" (215). Throughout the narrative, he uses Gikuyu apothegmatic expressions--proverbs, idioms, ideophones and interjections for the purpose of self-expression. His memoir reads like an oral tale. The reason is that he strives to translate orality into the written oral word. The book is replete with songs culled from the author's childhood memories. The one on page 34 is particularly interesting because it captures the servile obedience characteristic of colonial subjects:We are marching onWe are marching onAt whose order? The king's ordersLet's march on.Ngugi goes to great lengths to translate the discursive orality of his maternal tongue into written English. He simulates the Gikuku storyteller by creating the spontaneity of oral performance. In sum, the publication of this nonfictional book after the voluminous Wizard of the Crow (2006, 768 pages) is welcome relief for readers who are intimidated by sheer length. True to himself, Ngugi has proven once again to be a true master of the word.

Dreams in a Time of War: A Childhood Memoir by Ngugi wa'Thiong'o describes his childhood and coming of age in Kenya in the 1940's and 1950's. It is a really touching story of a young boy's thirst for knowledge and clearly provides the perspective of a native of Kenya.Ngugi describes what life was like for him growing up in Kenya in a polygamous family. His father had four wives and many children. Ngugi's mother was the third wife and Ngugi lived in her hut with his full siblings. The wives formed close relationships with each other as did the children. Early in life, Ngugi made a solemn promise to his mother to attend school and to his best possible if she would make the sacrifices necessary for him to go to school. This book really presents what life was like for Ngugi through the innocence of a child's eyes. We learn about who his friends were and what he did for fun. We also discover his heartbreak and travails when his father divorced his mother and she returned to live with her father. We begin to see the unfairness of the colonial rule when Ngugi's brother returns to Kenya after fighting in Burma in World War II and these former soldiers are not given equal treatment or justly credited or rewarded for their assistance.Dreams in a Time of War describes the beginnings of what is commonly termed the Mau Mau Rebellion through a child's eyes and the confusion of having members of his family on different sides during the rebellion. This was an enlightening read for me and I appreciated being able to see this through the innocence of a child.

What a treat! We read this together as a family and laughed and cried while I tried to recall stories of my grandparents too. We bought it to read as preparation for the performance of the show-- but only have one ticket...so my daughter is going. Still, it's such a good read, don't miss it! I'm fairly conservative home schooling mom but this gets dialog going and lets kids think about life in new ways- and be grateful for the smallest blessings we take for granted.

Actually I read this book a while ago, and I read a lot, so when I got this request, the first test was passed for writing the review. I remembered the book and the story. In a lot of ways, this was a "sad" story but it was told from the eyes of a child, with all their sense of adventure, belief in changing things. The story was told very well. I read it from cover to cover and over time will probably read it again. My family shares my Kindle, and I know for a fact that the book is being read by another person now. I think you'll enjoy it too!

Following 10 year-old Bud around during the Great Depression as he navigates his way from Flint, Michigan to Grand Rapids, Michigan in search of his father, is an adventure the reader will not soon forget. Bud has never known his father, and his mother died when Bud was six. Having spent time in an orphanage and different foster homes, Bud has developed survival skills that he outlines for the reader in his “Bud Caldwell’s Rules and Things to Have a Funner Life and Make a Better Liar Out of Yourself”. In his travels he meets several people who help him on his journey. Bud’s account of each meeting leaves the reader rallying in support of Bud in his quest to find his father. The story takes a somewhat surprising turn when Bud finally reaches Grand Rapids. The story is a great read and a page turner. It is difficult to put down because with each chapter the reader wants to find out what happens to Bud. This book can be enjoyed as an entertaining read for ages 9-12, or it can be incorporated into a 4th or 5th grade Social Studies lesson on the Great Depression. I give the story 4 out 5 stars only because I personally felt the ending left the reader wanting to know a bit more about the rest of Bud’s life in Grand Rapids; there should be an epilogue at the end.

Bud, not Buddy follows a ten-year-old boy during the Great Depression in his journey to find a father he's never met. As the Grandmother of a newly adopted young boy who is like Bud in nearly every way, this book deeply touched my heart. Bud, at least, had a mother who adored him and did everything in her power to care for him. That gave Bud a huge dose of "Hope" not available to so many of today's children who find themselves in a system that can't or doesn't protect them. I wept, laughed, and cheered for Bud as he exhibited so many of the same qualities as our newest family member. If you ever wondered what it's like to be a kid who simply wants to be loved and cared for, this book is a "must-read."Author Christopher Paul Curtis captures the heart and mind of a ten-year-old boy with courage and compassion. I did listen to my grandmother, and his research about the feelings of the day in the upper Midwest are 'spot-on' to the point you believe you are on the road with Bud. I urge parents everywhere to consider this book for their 8-12 year-olds. As I parent, I have only one word of caution. This book makes running away into a huge adventure. I would love to share this inspiration with my grandson, but it's far too early. His pain is still too raw from the neglect and abuse, and I would fear he would conjure up visions of a wonderful man waiting to take him in and love him.

You gotta love "Bud, Not Buddy"...or at least I did. It's a fun-loving tale. Just to follow Bud around in his adventures in Michigan feels real. I'm not saying I could actually relate given the time period but being from Michigan myself gave me something extra to think about. Not to give an spoilers but there's a certain amount of suspense to see if Bud's instincts, which leads him on his quest, pays off in the end. As with so many things in life and in this stories as well, the ending is not quite what we would expect, but no less gratifying.I didn't give it five stars because although I thought it was a good story and I liked it a lot, I didn't think it earth-shattering or even groundbreaking...just a nice story from Mr. Christopher Paul Curtis. He came to the school that I was teaching at, Schulze Elementary School, shortly after he wrote "Bud, Not Buddy" and gave a cool presentation to the kids...nice guy and an inspiration to any aspiring author.John Darryl Winston

I read Bud, Not Buddy back in fifth grade and I clearly remember it being one of the first books other than Harry Potter that I read ahead in. I wanted to know what happened next and couldn't be discouraged from doing so. Who needs recess when you have a brilliant short novel about an African American child trying to find his father during the Great Depression. He has many adventures along the way, obviously, and the book has stuck with me ever since then, even though I haven't read it in ten years or so. The one scene in particular that sticks with me (even though it isn't one of the beautiful scenes of the novel) is the one involving Bud locked in the shed and disturbing a nest of hornets. That one scared me as a kid and must have appealed to my as yet unrealized love for horror. All in all, this is a great book and I am glad that I was forced to read it in school. Most of the books the school forced us to read I enjoyed, but I think that this was my favorite of them.

"Runaway Devil" details a crime that caused ire and debate in Canada when it happened and upon the recent release of J.R. How was it that a twelve year old girl from a good family ended up killing them? Then, why was it that she received so little time for those crimes? For people more familiar with American true-crime tomes, this book adopts the restraint of our judicial system and approach to crime journalism in general. Unlike American television and crime coverage, we do not release constant footage. You won't see video of "perps" doing the walk or talking to their families in the visiting room. The gory details of crime photos are not displayed for all to see and share. In one case (the Bernardo trial) video footage of the assaults was destroyed in order to prevent future leaks onto the web. Some trials fall under media black-outs until they are complete. We are especially sensitive to the rights of juveniles. In the matter of this book, Robert Remington explains the difficulty he had in getting the okay to reproduce a drawing found in JR's locker. Thus, the information in "Runaway Devil" is more facts laden than salacious or gory. And plenty of facts there are. The reader discovers all that they need to know about both JR and her co-accused. Her parents weren't religious sticks-in-the mud. They were caring people who had both made it through substance abuse treatment centres and embraced clean living. The kids were loved and as JR admitted, not abused in any way. On the other hand, Jeremy Steinke was grossly failed by his mother, who allowed him to be beaten and bullied not only by his own father, but by two step-fathers. She used drugs while pregnant with him and continued to drink to excess, providing no guidance to ensure that he went to school. Robert Remington recounts how J.R. and Steinke met and how the murder came to fruition. The crime itself is explained, but not vividly so. There is no need to exploit the brutality and he walks that line well with his words. The book then covers how the two were caught and the subsequent police interrogation, which included an undercover agent. I enjoyed reading this book. As with Karla Homolka, I believe she knew how to manipulate and use people to downplay her involvement.

I first learned about J.R. aka Jasmine Richardson's case through the Deadly Women episode "Forbidden Love", and it shocked me to the very core. It was hard to believe a 12-year-old girl could kill both her parents and little brother with her 23-year-old boyfriend! And the legal outcome was a surprise, too!The book itself gives incredible details how an ordinary girl, the youngest killer in Canadian history, turned into a murderer and ended up betraying the people who loved her - her own family... My heart goes out to the Richardson family's friends. :(

I'm a big fan of the true crime genre, and this is one of the better books out there. I'm still astounded at the so-called punishment this 13 year old Jasmine Richardson received after pressuring her 23 year old lover into killing her parents, and eight year old brother. The book was insightful and disturbing. Jasmine Richardson wasn't abused or treated poorly by her parents, yet she hated them and wanted them dead because she hated their normal parental rules. She even faked a nice family outing with them; riding dirt bikes just a few days before their murder. From the lack of remorse it appears she's a sociopath.

This was a great read, and painted a graphic picture of the crime that was committed. I first heard about this crime on a podcast I read, and immediately needed to find the book to read. I'm letting a friend borrow it, and she is hooked too.I did however find a typo, no big deal though.

So sad for the family and Jasmine now out of jail with her university degree.

Fantastic book, it was a fun read all the way through

Well I came across this book in my recommendations column, and I decided to go with it. I mean, it says right in the title "how a twelve year old came to murder her family." A twelve year old! I had to admit that interested me, because when I think of myself at twelve, it was all about sleepovers, going to the movies, skating, Barbie dolls...you know, the normal kid's stuff. Boys hadn't and would not enter the picture for a few years. This story, which I will not bore those who read this with a synopsis of the story which you can read in the page above, is maddening! A young girl meets a man, not a boy, a grown man aged 23 years, falls "in love", and convinces him that her parents must die in order for their so-called love to be allowed to flourish. This case takes place in Canada, where the law for youths differs greatly from the U.S. under what is called the Youth Offenders Act, which secures a child's rights and spares them the harsh consequences of an adult offender. Now, the idea behind this law is not at all a bad one. It simply states that now what is known of children and their psychology and delicate, still growing brains, cannot understand the consequences of their actions in the long term, therefore they should not be sentenced the same as adults. But no one ever thinks (and why should they) that this will ever affect a case as gruesome and horrible as a 12 year old girl and her boyfriend/accomplice murdering her parents, and what can only be described as evil, the murder of her 8 year old brother. Young JR (as she is known, since the Youth Offenders Act protects the identity of the child) and her boyfriend, and also her sexual partner, Jeremy Steinke, were big into the Goth scene in their small town, which of course gave this story a bit of spice for the media, because surely this lifestyle must have had something to do with such an awful set of crimes being committed by two young people. I personally don't believe that to be true, as over my life I have had many goth friends, although not one myself, and they have always been very deep, loving, and overall pacifistic people. The murders could have just as easily been carried out by someone dressed in Abercrombie and Fitch, but the seemingly evil nature of the crimes fit perfectly in the minds of the public with a pair of black dressed, pierced, makeup wearing offenders. This book goes a little harsh on goth culture in my opinion, however it is well written, and penned by the reporters who first broke the story. It is a very unique case and one you will never forget. The book is also not too long, which I prefer in true crime novels, because I personally want the facts not the filler. It is a harsh reminder of the pains of puberty and child rearing, as both the parents and their murderers struggle with the kinds of problems that most of us do, but most of all a stunning reality that if it can happen here, it can happen anywhere. It will make you want to pull your hair out that this girl, who I think was the more dominant party, will never serve one day in jail, while her partner, who has been proved to be operating at about the level of a fourteen year old, will likely spend most of his life behind bars, which I'm not saying is undeserved, but this law that is in place to protect youths does not stipulate that there should be any protection for people with the cognitive levels of a child, which seems unfair. This girl will likely be back among the public in the next couple years, which makes one wonder if this law is really in the best interest of society, and not just the children it aims to protect. Anyway, a good read, and an interesting case of one of the most horrible little tweens you'll ever read about.

Great for kids, buy a copy so you don't have to rely on the internet.

I didn’t realize that this was digital!! Wanted the actual bools

My son loves it!

Our heroes head on to the Flower Kingdom to find the princess so she can sign the sword and they can continue in their quest to defeat the Nightmare Knight. But things in the Flower Kingdom don’t go quite like normal. For one thing, the royal family disappeared ages ago. For another thing, the disaster master in the Flower Kingdom is tired of going by the script. Meanwhile, Peridot is confused about which side she should be on and the Knightmare Knight shares some of his deeper secrets with friends he trusts. The plotline in this series veers from the normal in this book to explore some of the deeper motivations and backstory of how the whole quest cycle got started. It definitely adds depth to the overarching story if not being quite as adrenaline-driven as some of the other books. (There’s still some action, but there’s more chunks of dialogue and introspection than normal.) I think this series needs a character guide in the front or back of the book for readers. It is hard to keep ALL of the various side characters (there are over a dozen now) straight from book to book. That will be less of an issue when all the books are out and you can devour them one right after another, but when you have to wait several months between books it is a little challenging. I’m waffling between 3 and 4 stars for this one. I really liked the plot developments (and the scenes with the Knightmare Knight and Peridot were hilarious), but the flow of the book felt a little disjointed. So consider it 3.5. Overall, this series is a good choice for middle graders who like fantasy quests and cutesy graphic novels.Notes on content [Based on ARC]: No language issues. There are a few couples among the characters (both heterosexual and homosexual) but no kissing or anything. There are some fight scenes, but no one gets seriously hurt.I received an ARC of this title from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Brought to you by OBS reviewer CaroLoved the design of this comic! The comic design and characters are really cute. I love the color palette, and although I’m still not sure what the technique or medium of the illustration is, I like that it almost looks like pastel, with watercolor or gouache, it has a nice texture. The story was really fun to follow. Sir Carrot, Nautilus, Cucumber, and Almond get themselves involved in a, sort of, fashion contest. They get separated, reunited, and then find themselves in trouble against Rosemaster. My favorite part was seeing Rosemaster’s story unfold. She goes through different phases and her story becomes really intriguing. I hope we get to see more of her at some point in the future. Then there’s this pretty moment between Sir Carrot and princess Parfait, which has a beautiful illustrated flashback. And finally, there is very interesting scene between Peridot and Sir Nightmare that you can’t miss..Cucumber Quest: The Flower Kingdom is a fun volume for all ages and the artwork is something to appreciate. There are several interesting moments within the story that leave you wanting more and trying to figure out what will happen next. As a comic reader, I recommend Cucumber Quest: The Flower Kingdom!Memorable Quotes:“Cut the monologue!”

Read for hero character development, villain character development, and laughs. Rosemaster is Best Disaster.
