This was one of my favorite books as a kid. I bought a copy recently to read at our family's Hanukkah gathering, and it's just as charming and thrilling as I remember. It's a great story that teaches lessons about courage, faith, and keeping a good sense of humor even when the world around you is a scary place. The story includes the greatest hits of a traditional Hanukkah: lighting the menorah, playing dreidel, and making latkes, so whether your family celebrates every year or doesn't know the first thing about Hanukkah, you'll get a great sense of the spirit and origins of the holiday. The illustrations are colorful and kind of goofy, but maybe a little scary for kids under 4. I'd recommend this book for families of all faiths who want to read an exciting, endearing story to the kiddos around the holidays.

I remembered reading this book as a child, so I purchased it for my friend's kids, ages 3 and 5, because she wanted me to teach them about Hannukah. They LOVED it. My friend told me later that they had to hide the book because the kids wanted to read it over and over. It doesn't tell the story of Hannukah, if that's what you're looking for, but it discusses some of the Hannukah traditions. There aren't a lot of great Hannukah books out there, so I'm glad this book exists.Note: Some of the illustrations can be a little scary for young children, so I'd skim it before you read it to your kids.

I love this story! My father used to borrow it from another teacher and read it to us when we were younger and recently him and I were talking about it. After putting our brains together we remembered the name and I ordered a copy for my own daughters. They both love it too!

The reviews for this book helped me decide to purchase and I'm glad I did!! The story is so clever. I usually don't like goblins and witches stories or anything scary for that matter and I don't do Halloween, BUT I really enjoyed this book immensely. It's one of my favorite kid's books on the shelf. I shared it with my nieces and they loved it. I think the background and the meaning of the story is what really hits home. The story has great object lessons in it as well.

This is my favorite Hanukkah story. While it doesn't explain the meaning behind Hanukkah, it's riveting for children and as an adult I still enjoy Hershel's wit. Our family definitely likes it better than drier books which explain Hanukkah more. I am confused by the review that says this book advocates violence as Hershel tricks all of the goblins without physically hurting them (though I suppose he does threaten one of them). If your kids are not Jewish, you should explain the rules of the dreidel game before reading the book or else they won't understand Hershel's trick involving the rules.

There could be no equal to this book in its category. We read it aloud to our kids every year at holiday time. I have given it as gifts to several children in the family. Hyman's illustrations are perfect! The story is both charming and spellbinding to kids who can take a little scariness along with their pleasure in a good read.It deserves more than five stars!

My very favorite Hanukkah story. Read it to my children and my religious school students every year. When my son was in Iraq, I would email a section to him every night of Hanukkah. It was good for both of us. Very highly recommended!

I absolutely ADORE this book! Every year for ten years I read this for my students at a Jewish day school. They absolutely loved it. I'm not Jewish, but I love this book so much I bought my own copy. Great story about an everyday guy who uses his brains and faith to outwit a horrible adversary. Beautiful story will make you laugh, cry and jump in fright. Beautiful beautiful illustrations by Trina Schart Hyman. An essential purchase for all Jewish households, and anyone who loves a good story.

This revision is not faithful to the original. They have not improved it, they have alerted it and removed critical definitions. One Example: 119Â 'adam aw-dam' to show blood (in the face), i.e. flush or turn rosy:--be (dyed, made) red (ruddy). The revised edition completely removed this definition and simply says Adam is the name of the First man.Deception.

This is not the classic Strongs Concordance. While it is still an exhaustive concordance, it no longer contains the Strongs numbering system with the references. You cannot use this book to conduct a word study. If you are looking for the familiar Strongs, then this is not it.

If all your trying to do is look up english word meanings its good. But if you're using it to look up hebrew or greek words cor a meaning forget about it. You will also not be looking up words by there Concordanance number. Pretty useless to me.

I love it, its a little heavy but I like that its both a Bible Dictionary and a Concordance instead of having to buy both of them.

Very easy to read understand and helpful in learning the Greek language which is the original Bible language

The Concordance letters are so small, I need a magnifying glass in order to read the fine print. But, for the price I guess you get what you pay for.I know I am going to have to end up buying a concordance with larger print in the future.

Without the Strong's Number's and The Complete Vines Edition, it leaves a student of the word looking for additional sources. Suggest purchasing these two separately.

Writing was way to small for me, and I don't usually have a problem with that.

I love the clear and concise editing of the information. Also the direct approach of the facts.

My son has been obsessed with humpback whales since we saw many of them in Maui this year. I bought this book for him, so that he could read a "story" about a humpback whale, instead of just a non-fiction book. This is a cute story that is based on a true story. It turns out well in the end, and if your child loves whales, they will enjoy this story.

My Grandchildren enjoyed this book. We're planning a family vacation soon to the San Francisco Bay area, where this took place.

Cute story, cute illustrations. I purchased this as a read-aloud book for a mom of a toddler, but it's a little longer than I expected. Perhaps not that great for a read-aloud due to the length but still a fun story. I like the maps inside the front cover and it was a cute gift to go along with a stuffed whale toy.

Bought this for my sons 7th birthday. I needed it because we had been making weekly trips to the library to check this book out. We read it all the time. Truly a wonderful story about how amazing whales are. I also bought him a plush whale that looked just like Humphrey in the story. He loved the book and the stuffed whale.

This is a great book. My son received it as a gift when he was 8 years old. He is now 30. We have kept the book all these years. I bought a copy of it for my grandson and also one for school. I use it at school after a reading unit on whales. All the students love the story of Humphrey. I got tired of taking it back and forth from home to school, so I bought a copy just for school. It is such a fun non-fiction story for anyone.

All of the children loved the story of Humphrey.

I live where Humphrey the whale got stuck so the story means a lot. I'm a teacher for the county's adult literacy program and my learner and I enjoy reading the book together.

As such it has received scrupulous attention by scholars and Egyptologists to ensure, as much as possible, an accurate translation and scholarly interpretation of the this most important primary historical document. I strongly urge all readers with a general interest in the history of the world of the Ancients and in particular those with an interest in Ancient Egypt to read this text.

So well done. The initial index is a bit confusing, but it may be that I am not used the this method of writing. It was wonderful to go though this work. I have read other, like by Robert Ritner, and it is wonderful the depth of knowledge is shared so effortlessly. I loved the asides that helped outline Egyptian Religion. It made so much of the book of the dead make more sense. It also helped me thoroughly enjoy the VR tour of Ramses Queen's vault on Oculus. You have awoken a love for this that has slumbered. Outstanding!
