Very practical and helpful book on Bike Touring. Touring is not the same as "going down the path or trail as fast as you can" but has more to do with truly experiencing the joy of the ride, seeing the environment and meeting new friends along the way. This is a definite shift from what many see as pushing hard to get the workout in. I was encouraged to be more intentional, slow down a bit and enjoy my love of cycling.

A very informative and insightful book! If you want to get on track to produce a healthy baby as well as yourself, this books for you!

Both my wife and I have been interested in having a healthy pregnancy for our next child. I like to research heavily and know more about nutrition but my wife prefers a simple guide and doesn't want to know all the intricate details. While she wants to have a healthy pregnancy and baby just as much as me, she would rather have an easy-to-read guide or checklist of supplements, foods, and lifestyle things to follow. I found this book is great for both our styles of learning. It covers pre-conception tactics, each stage of pregnancy, and breastfeeding and nutrition after the baby is born. I loved that this book includes detailed lists of vitamins/minerals needed, what foods to eat, and how much. Overall the book is an easy read with some good lists and guidelines that are quick to scan but there are also some areas that go in to more detail. While I don't agree with all the food suggestions, I think the recommendations overall are excellent, especially for someone who may live in an area without much access to locally grown, less toxic foods, or specialty health food stores. We will definitely refer back to this book during each pregnancy stage and even the months before our next child.

Excellent book if rather specialized.

I read this book almost two decades ago and I just read it again. This is a book that deserves several readings. Sass has given us analogies to the understanding of madness that we can, for once, actually look at...opening up a new road to understanding "modern art" and chronic mental illness. Since madness is always a broken, puzzling departure from what is considered "normal"; a visual representation of this extremely personal and in most cases incomprehensible reality is very welcome. Louis Sass has given us a whole new starting point on a new psychic road map.

This book has a wonderful thesis wherein much modern literature is associated with traits of schizophrenia. Reading the mentioned literature is a lot of fun. In addition to recognizing the relationships to Sass’s text the books are enjoyable in and of themselves.

With an interpretation so rigorous and self-critical that it is almost cruel, Sass teases out the threads of experience joining madness to modernism. Unlike some who do this sort of work, Sass is well-versed not only in psychology and psychiatry but also in contemporary intellectual discourse, and makes sophisticated use of the work of figures such as Foucault and de Man in his reading. He argues provocatively, using literary, artistic, and autobiographical works as well as empirical data, that schizophrenia is not (as many say) a form of Dionysian primitivity but rather a kind of violent entanglement in the paradoxes of hyperconsciousness. This book is absolutely a must read for anyone interested in schizophrenia or in modernism. Luckily, Sass is a fine writer and makes the book quite an enjoyable read as well.

Louis Sass has written a fascinating comparisonof modernism and schizophrenia and relateddisorders -- I couldn't put this book down. Sass' knowledge of modern art and literature, coupled with his experience as a clinical psychologist and professor at Rutgers, makes this book. It's extremely well-written -- the language is complex, but by no means stilted and academic for the sake of being academic. Sass' words will catch you and draw you through fascinating discussions about identity, language, visual representation, and much more. He presents balanced observations and makes appropriate connections -- he doesn't romanticize schizophrenia. One story he relays expresses this perfectly (pardon my paraphrasing): James Joyce discussed the creative similarities between him and his daughter, a schizophrenic, with Carl Jung. Jung described the difference between Joyce's creativity and his daughter's seeming creativity by saying that the difference was that Joyce was diving down into the depths while his daughter was falling. This is a perfect analogy to put Sass' book into perspective. If you have any interest in issues of identity, psychology, and modern culture, you will want to read this book.

This is one of my favorite books. As a work on psychological styles and the nature of rationality, I rank it right up with The Greeks and the Irrational, by E.R. Dodds. The basic argument is that madness is not irrationality, but extreme and excessive rationality, and that the totalizing reasoning of madness shows parallels to the totalizing reasoning of philosophical, artistic, and literary modernism. This is an intriguing view in its own right, and it is a valuable response to the romanticization of madness by those such as Norman O. Brown, who declared that "schizophrenia is the dissolution of the false boundaries of self."I do have some reservations about this fascinating argument. First, I don't think Sass ever makes clear the nature of the connection between madness and modernism. Does he see the former as caused by the latter? Are both manifestations of the organization of an industrial society? Second, Sass doesn't seem to recognize that he is actually working within a well-established intellectual tradition. The psychological and aesthetic literature on decadence in the late nineteenth century, as exemplified by Max Nordau's Degeneration, saw both madness and avant-garde artistic expression as products of hypertrophy of the intellect. Third, there may be important differences between the deterministic world of madness and that of modernism. Specifically, the rationality of modernity can be seen as connecting causes and effects on a single surface of reality that neither reflects nor penetrates any other dimension. Madness, on the other hand, seems to work within a rationality of depth, giving thoughts and occurrences a metaphysical resonance.

While growing up I had several friends, and acquaintances, who were diagnosed as having schizoid personalities. I was curious, so I read several books on the subject and this is the only one that actually seemed to line it's theories up with what I knew from personal experience. Namely, that these were people who were hyperconscious. He did well in explaining how this could create distortions in viewpoint rather than enhancements. A few of my friends were even fans of the artists and philosophers referenced in the book as examples. His references to Foucault, his theory of the panopticon, and the empirical and transcendental doublet were also very insightful in explaining his theory.

Book was very nice. Much larger than I expected. Excellent coffee table book.

A beautiful book from cover to cover. The images are crisp and the subject matter simply breathtaking. The French garden is the Italian Garden talken to the formal extreme. The master of the French garden, the incomparable, Le Notre, brought the formal garden to its apex, with his work at Veax le Vicomte and Versailles. This book does a wonderful job of capturing the French garden at its most spectacular. If you have any interest in formal gardens are just appreciate amazing photography and beauty in general, then i can't imagine you not loving this book. As for the the other reviews comment about this not being a self help book on French formal gardening..i concur, but honestly madame, were you going to go out and create the the Neptune Fountain at Versailles? I suggest u invest in a copy of the Sun King's notes on the gardens of Versailles, they are well written and quite in depth, I mean what else did Louis have to do, I suppose... I mean get real; it's good to be da king..

If you are looking for a coffee table book with gorgeous pictures, this is definitely a wonderful book. If you are looking for a book, as I was, that would show you photos of complete gardens so that you might create your own French-inspired garden, this is not the best choice. However, it is a delightful addition to any garden library. If you have been lucky enought to visit France, it brings back fond memories of the landscape. Enjoy!

The book actually goes beyond guidance for coding a secure application, providing insight into building a solid, high quality application. Indeed, in the Preface it notes that the goal of the rules is to help developers build "higher quality systems that are safe, secure, reliable, dependable, robust, resilient, available, and maintainable".The coding standards are provided as a clearly documented set of rules, each one including some summary information about the rule, code examples of the rule not being followed as well as code that does follow the rule, enumerated exceptions where it's permissible to deviate from the rule, and lastly a risk assessment of the vulnerability that arises when you don't follow the rule. The list of rules is extensive, so the authors have helpfully grouped them into the following categories:* Input Validation and Data Sanitization* Declarations and Initialization* Expressions* Numeric Types and Operations* Object Orientation* Methods* Exceptional Behavior (i.e., proper usage and handling of exceptions)* Visibility and Atomicity* Locking* Thread APIs* Thread Pools* Thread-Safety Miscellaneous* Input Output* Serialization* Platform Security* Runtime Environment* MiscellaneousThis presentation format lends itself to a very organized and comprehensive treatment of the subject, but doesn't make it the type of book that you can easily read from cover to cover. It would be fair to say that it reads more like a reference book that's tremendously useful when you're interested in practical secure Java coding practices for a specific area rather than as a training guide. Before finding that specific topic of interest, however, it would be wise to read the excellent introductory chapter. The introduction provides overviews of each of the principle sources of vulnerabilities in Java applications: misplaced trust; injection attacks (including a very helpful explanation of the appropriate use and sequencing of validation, sanitization, canonicalization, and normalization); leaking sensitive data; leaking capabilities; denial of service; serialization; concurrency, visibility, and memory; security managers; and class loaders.It's also important to note that many of the rules focus on how to write mobile code that can be safely executed in untrusted systems or how to use untrusted mobile code on trusted systems. In these cases, the attacker is writing code that interacts with your code and takes advantage of vulnerabilities you have left by not following the prescribed rules. This attacker context is quite different from that of an external hacker trying to take advantage of flaws in a web site, for example.Although the book is probably best used as a reference guide in which you'll seek out a topic of interest rather than read from front to back, it's undeniably a highly valuable contribution to the topic of secure Java coding. As such, it's a useful addition to the bookshelves of Java architects, developers, and application security auditors.

Nice reference material, but not very useful for the average developer. It has an small introductory chapter on secure coding practices and the remaining of the book is a list of common vulnerabilities and a short advise on how to avoid them, but it lacks details on how to identify and address them or on how the developers should change their programming practices to avoid introducing them in the first place. If you are looking for a book to help you code secure applications, you should look somewhere else.

Well-written book. Serves its purpose that my team is using it for. Every sprint they choose new security standards to address (and automate) and this book is a big help in that regard. Easy to dissect and find useful information.

It has been a decade since Oracle started their unbreakable campaign touting the security robustness of their products.Aside from the fact that unbreakable only refers to the enterprise kernel; Oracle still can have significant security flaws.Even though Java supports very strong security controls including JAAS (Java Authentication and Authorization Services), it still requires a significant effort to code Java securely.With that, The CERT Oracle Secure Coding Standard for Java is an invaluable guide that provides the reader with the strong coding guidelines and practices in order to reduce coding vulnerabilities that can lead to Java and Oracle exploits.The book is from CERT, and like other CERT books, provides both the depth and breadth necessary to gain mastery on the topic.The book includes various rules and recommended practices for secure programming for Java SE6 and SE 7. Unfortunately, the book does not provide an on-line reference to version 1.0.The book also covers the most common coding errors that lead to Java vulnerabilities and detail how they can be avoided.For those using Java on Oracle and hoping to build secure applications, The CERT Oracle Secure Coding Standard for Java is a very useful resource that no programmer should be without.The first 100 pages of the book are available here. After read it, you will be likely to want to see the next 650 pages.
