He holds an undergraduate degree in computer engineering from Pune University, India, where he researched with Calsoft, Inc., during his academic pursuit.   A writing enthusiast, Dhruv occasionally contributes articles to technology magazines and online resources. He brings forth his experience and learning from developing and securing service oriented applications, server monitoring software, mobile device applications, web-based data miners, and designing user-friendly security interfaces.   Robert C. Seacord is a computer security specialist and writer. He is the author of books on computer security, legacy system modernization, and component-based software engineering.   Robert manages the Secure Coding Initiative at CERT, located in Carnegie Mellon’s Software Engineering Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. CERT, among other security-related activities, regularly analyzes software vulnerability reports and assesses the risk to the Internet and other critical infrastructure. Robert is an adjunct professor in the Carnegie Mellon University School of Computer Science and in the Information Networking Institute.   Robert started programming professionally for IBM in 1982, working in communications and operating system software, processor development, and software engineering. Robert also has worked at the X Consortium, where he developed and maintained code for the Common Desktop Environment and the X Window System. Robert has a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.   Dean F. Sutherland is a senior software security engineer at CERT. Dean received his Ph.D. in software engineering from Carnegie Mellon in 2008. Before his return to academia, he spent 14 years working as a professional software engineer at Tartan, Inc. He spent the last six of those years as a senior member of the technical staff and a technical lead for compiler backend technology. He was the primary active member of the corporate R&D group, was a key instigator of the design and deployment of a new software development process for Tartan, led R&D projects, and provided both technical and project leadership for the 12-person compiler back-end group.   David Svoboda is a software security engineer at CERT. David has been the primary developer on a diverse set of software development projects at Carnegie Mellon since 1991, ranging from hierarchical chip modeling and social organization simulation to automated machine translation (AMT). His KANTOO AMT software, developed in 1996, is still in production use at Caterpillar. He has over 13 years of Java development experience, starting with Java 2, and his Java projects include Tomcat servlets and Eclipse plug-ins. David is also actively involved in several ISO standards groups: the JTC1/SC22/WG14 group for the C programming language and the JTC1/ SC22/WG21 group for C++.

"The CERT Oracle Secure Coding Standard for Java" is a thoroughly researched and authoritative guide to secure coding in Java. It specifically focuses on Java SE 6 and some of the features of Java SE 7, so don't look for coverage of security best practices for Java EE and certainly not for web application security issues that target aspects of HTTP, HTML, or JavaScript (e.g., Cross-Site Scripting, Cross-Site Request Forgery, etc.). The book actually goes beyond guidance for coding a secure application, providing insight into building a solid, high quality application. Indeed, in the Preface it notes that the goal of the rules is to help developers build "higher quality systems that are safe, secure, reliable, dependable, robust, resilient, available, and maintainable".The coding standards are provided as a clearly documented set of rules, each one including some summary information about the rule, code examples of the rule not being followed as well as code that does follow the rule, enumerated exceptions where it's permissible to deviate from the rule, and lastly a risk assessment of the vulnerability that arises when you don't follow the rule. The list of rules is extensive, so the authors have helpfully grouped them into the following categories:* Input Validation and Data Sanitization* Declarations and Initialization* Expressions* Numeric Types and Operations* Object Orientation* Methods* Exceptional Behavior (i.e., proper usage and handling of exceptions)* Visibility and Atomicity* Locking* Thread APIs* Thread Pools* Thread-Safety Miscellaneous* Input Output* Serialization* Platform Security* Runtime Environment* MiscellaneousThis presentation format lends itself to a very organized and comprehensive treatment of the subject, but doesn't make it the type of book that you can easily read from cover to cover. It would be fair to say that it reads more like a reference book that's tremendously useful when you're interested in practical secure Java coding practices for a specific area rather than as a training guide. Before finding that specific topic of interest, however, it would be wise to read the excellent introductory chapter. The introduction provides overviews of each of the principle sources of vulnerabilities in Java applications: misplaced trust; injection attacks (including a very helpful explanation of the appropriate use and sequencing of validation, sanitization, canonicalization, and normalization); leaking sensitive data; leaking capabilities; denial of service; serialization; concurrency, visibility, and memory; security managers; and class loaders.It's also important to note that many of the rules focus on how to write mobile code that can be safely executed in untrusted systems or how to use untrusted mobile code on trusted systems. In these cases, the attacker is writing code that interacts with your code and takes advantage of vulnerabilities you have left by not following the prescribed rules. This attacker context is quite different from that of an external hacker trying to take advantage of flaws in a web site, for example.Although the book is probably best used as a reference guide in which you'll seek out a topic of interest rather than read from front to back, it's undeniably a highly valuable contribution to the topic of secure Java coding. As such, it's a useful addition to the bookshelves of Java architects, developers, and application security auditors.

Nice reference material, but not very useful for the average developer. It has an small introductory chapter on secure coding practices and the remaining of the book is a list of common vulnerabilities and a short advise on how to avoid them, but it lacks details on how to identify and address them or on how the developers should change their programming practices to avoid introducing them in the first place. If you are looking for a book to help you code secure applications, you should look somewhere else.

The guide is great. Maybe it's me, but when I ordered it along with the field guide for birds I was offered the mammal guide in turtleback for a few dollars more. I paid the extra, but both arrived in paperback form.

*Any* kind of traveling into the Country, the Plains, Mountains, and/or West requires this *compleat* reference in your to-go material, especially if you have children, who will *greatly* enjoy knowing more about the critters of our natural world! Additionally, having this *trusty* guide handy at home also opens up discussions about animals commonly seen, even in cities, such as raccoons, possums, and, yes, even skunks! The representative photos are most helpful in differenting one type of animal spotted from another, to arrive at a sure identification--and are fascinating to look at too! Altho' we reveled in our Southern California home about seeing (*really*!) coyotes (especially on golf courses) and foxes, latter of which regularly came into our yard, even with their pups, we've been *awed* at the new animals we're seeing in our retirement location elsewhere in the West: badgers, yellow-bellied marmots, covies of quail (which weren't as plentiful in our SoCal neighborhoods), chukkars, and plentiful black bear (a species also not rarely found in outskirts of Southern California cities and towns)! Obtaining this exhaustive reference was our answer and now we wonder *why* didn't we secure one before now in our lives!?! You'll love it and learn a *great* deal from it too!

Great book alot of imformation

This book is very interesting and has more details than you would ever want to know. If you are interested in nature....this is a must have. I see little creatures all of the time that I look up to see what they are and learn a little about them. My kids love it as well. The photos in the front section make identification simple. Then we go to the back section to learn specifics about the animals.

Randy Wayne White is an authentic character. I suspected as much from reading his fiction efforts, usually involving Doc Ford. But in this collection of essays about his travels, you can see that he does not subscribe to Travel & Leisure or Conde Nast Traveler. He picks the damndest places to go, the damndest things to do when he gets there and writes about his experiences in a completely entertaining and very informative fashion. These are not your traditional outings and Mr. White would have it no other way. Hunting crocs with some authentic, although somewhat legal poachers, chasing pigs through cathedrals, exploring the seldom traveled parts of Australia, or fishing for fresh water sharks in Nicaragua (legend has it they exist), he is seldom far from disaster and you perversely kind of wish you were there..but not totally. He shows another side of himself with the gifts he brings to share with unknown Nicaraguan youngsters. I won't spoil the fun of finding out what it is...but it shows a softer side of the author, which is as welcome as his normal personna.

Randy Wayne White, what can I say. I am a true fan of this author. The Sharks of Lake Nicaragua , like Mr. Whites other books, captivates you from the moment you open the front cover until you close the back cover. Another tale knocked out of the ball park for Mr. White. The only thing I can say is I hate to finish his books because I have to immediately go on a search for another one. You can not read his books without being totally transported to the point of action. LOVE IT ... what a wonderful means of escape at the end of a day. Thank you

A very quick read. Somewhat entertaining, but not much substance for prospective travelers to Nicarauga or elsewhere. The cover, or dust cover, of this book I bought via Amazon in May of 2000 looks nothing like the artwork on the Amazon web page I bought it from. Recommend you get this book in the library, read it and put it back on the shelf, as this is easily accomplished in a short library visit.-John

Excellent book, except p148 was missing. The conclusion of one of the stories. Still worthwhile.

This book contains some of the best writing on the world outdoors -- and the people and creatures there -- that I have ever encountered. Ranks among Nick Lyons, Edwin Way Teale, John Muir, Teddy Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway.

Some dated material does not detract from the fine writing.

This is a collection of short stories. Only the last chapter (25 large font pages) deals with the title of the book. In this story there is more talk about baseball than anything else, the author glorifying himself by giving away baseballs to little boys. The author visits Granada, a place he can't even spell right, calling it Grenada again and again. There is absolutely nothing interesting about the Sharks of Lake Nicaragua, only a few quotes from past explorers and some gossip from the locals. If you are thinking about buying the book because you want to know about The Sharks of Lake Nicaragua, you will be waisting your money. As far as the rest of the short stories goes, I can't say since I haven't bothered reading them.

I bought this book as a Christmas (Happy Birthday, Jimmy!) gift for my Parrothead dad. He hasn't stopped talking about it for a week! A wonderful book with a good collection of Jimmy's songs, although it is not a complete collection. I already owned the Rick Steves & Lonely Planet Barcelona guide books, but decided to purchase this due to the extensive photos and recommendations from a friend. I'm so glad I did as this book gave us a much better visual of the areas, and was the book I carried around with me while touring. It also includes more sites, including minor ones in the area that the other books do not mention. By learning about these other sites, we were able to vary our walking routes a little and see some interesting sites we otherwise wouldn't have known existed. The street/area picture diagrams were so helpful. I also purchased the Rome version of this book, and again was so glad I did for the same reasons.On the flipside, I don't think the info was thorough enough to be the only guidebook to a city. It was the perfect companion to my Rick Steves book, but lacked the information about how to get tickets in advance, skip the long admission lines, and background info that Rick Steves gives. Rick Steves has very few photos, and doesn't include many of the extra sites around the major sites, so having both books was extremely helpful.

This travel guide was very well written with short, detailed information on a number of sights. It included hotel and restaurant recommendations, a survival guide with practical information and it also included a pull out map. The map was okay, but not as detailed as I would have liked. I did like the fact that when the map was folded there was an excellent easy to read map of the city metro system. Some of the other listings in the guide were related to shopping tips, a glossary of typical Catalan food, eating hours (meal times), entertainment information, music, film...etc. I actually used one of the restaurant recommendations and it was spot on. A great meal at around the price reflected in the guide. We also saw the Flamenco show (Tablao de Carmen) which was also recommended and it was fabulous. There are several show options and we chose the show with tapas menu. We were supposed to get five Tapas and sangria and all I can say is that the food just kept coming and when we finished a pitcher of sangria another was quickly brought to us. The meal was excellent and a great value. The Flamenco show itself was incredible - very professional with a live band and singers as well as three female and one male dancer.

DK Eyewitness Travel Guides are very useful. If I were rank them based on my use, I'd give them five stars; I use them because often a picture is worth 1000 words in terms of helping me understand where I want to put my tourist time. Then I use them again to remind me of locations when I am sorting through photographs of my trip. For those two purposes they excel. Some of the other sections on customs, holidays, language, food can be helpful as well.What you won't find in these guides, this one included, is the quaint little hotel with comfortable reasonably priced rooms and family welcome, nor the little out of the way restaurant, nor finally the last word in history and analysis of monuments.What I might wish for as the "ideal guide" is one with lots of pictures, Michelin Green Guide style rankings (*** = make an express trip, ** = make a detour to see, * = see if you're in the neighborhood), planned driving and walking itineraries, and then some Rough Guide or Routard style food and lodging recommendations.

I have the travel bug...big time.I'm not the type of person that loves to dig into articles to read about the places I will be visiting, so Eyewitness Travel Guides are perfect...I skim through each travel guide before I leave, and mark the places that I'd like to visit with a post-it note. In this case, as soon as I arrived in Barcelona, I read more about the places I was seeing.This book has a lot of great tips on the places to see in and around Barcelona. I found some great beaches and was very happy to get lost around Las Ramblas.I recommend grabbing this guide before your next trip to Barcelona...it isn't too heavy and it has all the maps you need in the front & back covers.

I love the DK Eyewitness Travel Guides...when time is short and one wants to focus a trip on the key factors this book is a great resource. The points are concise and clear. Lots of pictures, lots of suggestions. Best restaurants, hotels, sites to see in each part of the city. Very helpful!

We love the DK books. We're casual adventurers who don't do much in terms of tours, but rather prefer to immerse ourselves in the culture we are visiting. The DK books are a great way to do that in a safe way as it gives you the highlights of places, enough history to give you perspective and appreciation, solid recommendations as to food, hotels, etc., and excellent tips on cultural aspects for which we should be on the lookout. Easy to read maps. We did Barcelona with this book and the Top Ten and had a fantastic time.

I had been to Barcelona twice before buying this book to plan a trip with my mother. I planned the trip exclusively with this guidebook and we had a blast. The book had great information and beautiful pictures. It made it really easy to figure out what was in Barcelona and what we wanted to see. The maps and directions were extremely helpful. I don't think I got lost once, which is a big deal because I'm extremely terrible with directions and locations.

We used this beautiful Eyewitness Guide in Barcelona. It is not heavy and easily fit into my purse. In fact, we saw many tourists from a number of various countries walking with their Eyewitness Travel Guide in a plethora of languages. We wouldn't travel without it.
