I'll start by saying that this book is right up my alley because, as a garden designer, I'm all about weaving plant texture, shape and color together. This book is both beautiful and inspirational. I can't stop flipping through the book, mesmerized by the photographs, long after I read the text. I hope to meet the O'Byrnes one day, but, until then, I'm mesmerized by the photographs and commentary of their garden. So many ideas,,, so little time.

Wonderful book. Though I don't know the horticultural names for the plants discussed, the pictures say it all. Wonderful transformation of land.

Another major winner! I read every word. I have books that are scientific and plant specific but my favorite thing to read are books like this when someone tells the story of how their garden evolved. Loved it as much as The Layered Garden and that is saying alot!

Doesn’t translate well to a southern garden.

A Tapestry Garden by Ernie O'Byrne and Marietta O'Byrne highlights the development of their home gardens. First of all these gardens are beautifully shown in the photographs. It is evident that this was a project of love for this couple as well as a massive undertaking.I enjoyed the text which is very readable but it was the photographs that make this book shine. Before and after photos were included. Well done were the after photos which emphasized individual plants and entire areas of plantings. I did wish that there could have been more photographs during the work so that I could see the progress being made on the areas.This is not so much of a reference or how-to book as it is a history of the journey in the creation of the O’Byrne’s gardens. It is a beautiful tribute to the work that they have created.4.5 StarsThe publisher through Net Galley provided an ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my opinion and thoughts.

The O'Bryne's garden came alive in this book, and their passion in beauty and plants channels thru the text of the book.Its very fun to read, and i haven't been able to put the books down!! This makes a great gift for anyone who likes gardens.

This is a large "10x11" sized book, around 200 pages, with over 200 lovely color plates and other illustrations. In fact, that's what most of this book is- a large color plate with history, description and excellent notes. Each is a masterwork in of itself- both the original glass piece and the photo with the well written descriptions and notes.Each plate could almost be framed, they are that nice. The photos are usually about 4"x6" leaving room for the text. Each plate represents one item in the Wolf collection.The tome starts out with a comprehensive glossary. The author starts about 30BCE, and each chapter has about a 20 page intro, covering the history and types found in that era and area.We then have around 50 plates per chapter, as described above.The book ends around the 8th Century. Besides Roman, Byzantine and Early medieval, the author also covers early Islamic Ummayad vessels, some Palestinian and other associated areas and eras of the main period and geographical areas.Of course, most of the book is on vessels- beakers, bowls, urns, jugs, etc. However, there is a nice section on objects of personal adornment- ring stones, seals and especially beads.This book is perfect for any person who loves this period or loves glass. Artists, collectors or historians.

The book itself was in perfect condition, 'new' as described by the seller. However, the dust jacket was badly smudged in a very visible spot on the front cover and since I purchased the item as a gift, it was unsuitable for the intended purpose. Nevertheless, the seller was very responsive upon receiving my complaint and sent a new dust jacket right away in a tube mailer. It arrived in perfect condition and despite the delay, all worked out well. I would use them again - it was a very good price for the product.

I really felt that it could have used some more in depth information in some parts, but then might have gone spontaneously into too much information in others. I'm an RN student that decided to take a CNA class for personal enrichment and to keep my skills sharp. Some areas I really felt gave information without the rationale that I know you have to have to understand WHY. And then, in other areas, it gave enough details as to how a system works ,but used these large words that it didn't really define---expecting you to already know it, which you wouldn't unless you'd had nursing education ABOVE the CNA level. I just thought that was a bit poorly written.

This book is one seasoned developer's guided tour of UML. After giving a bit of background on UML's genesis, Fowler outlines the sort of development process that UML was designed to support. Unlike most such discussions, this one is both readable and level headed; Fowler clearly has a lot of experience with real-world projects, and considers "doability" much more important than ideology. In each chapter, Fowler describes a single aspect of UML, such as its activity diagrams or case notation, and shows how it should be used and how it fits into the overall development process. The examples are easy to follow, the diagrams are clear, and the author's enjoyment of his work comes through again and again.

Fowler (with contributions by Scott) gives quick and concise instructions on using the UML replete with example diagrams and example code. His style is wonderfully engaging and easy to approach. I found myself able to draw use cases, classes, activity diagrams, and more in almost no time.Fowler sized the book on the small side (under 200 pages), yet gives a complete if sometimes merely cursory introduction to all of the components of the UML. After digesting its contents, I found myself wanting more details, particularly on a process to go with the UML diagramming. Despite the small size, Fowler finds space to include mention on related OOA&D issues, such as CRC cards, design patterns, and design-by-contract.The book suffers from one drawback, which is more than likely not the fault of its authors: the typesetting is terrible. Sudden font changes in the figures and in the text, the use of prime symbols interchangeably with apostrophes (sometimes in the same paragraph), overlapping lines in figures, and a chapter introduction element (two lines that aren't quite the same length) are examples of some of the problems.Luckily, it's easy to overlook the poor typesetting and focus on the substantive information that Fowler presents, which is of superior quality.

This book is useful for what it really is: an introduction to the graphical language of UML. It does not really teach one much about modelling, or about methodologies for OOAD. So it poses a strange problem: it is a beginner's book, but unsuitable for total beginners. It is best read by people who already have an understanding of the OOAD process- others may end up rather confused.For those who are new to UML but not OO, it is a very useful introduction to the notation. I find myself constantly looking things up, and it is pretty complete. Reminds me of the "in a nutshell" books, but more readable.I like Fowler's style and if I were to complain, I would say that it needs some more down-to-earth techniques (e.g. how would you model a login, or a client-server with sockets, etc.) which would put the notation into a more useful context.

This book is a great primer on OO development. The writing style in books I have read by Boochand others tends to be so detailed that the overall picture is lost. Fowler does a good job of providing context for his examples. He also never claims the book is an exhaustive reference so the reader is never deceived. He is also one of the few authors who thankfully separates the modelling language from the process. He provides suggestions as for what diagrams to use with each stage of the process as opposed to the dogmatic approach taken by most authors in this field of expertise. Finally, the bibliography is one of the most useful I have seen since the text of the book provides the strengths and weaknesses of the entries.

"UML Distilled" is an excellent introduction to UML, and a good refresher on the visual aspects of analysis and design. Fowler and Scott cram a lot of useful information and practical advice (e.g., when to bend the rules) into a small space--something which harried professionals will appreciate.

Martin Fowler is telling us on how he sees the development process with UML. The book is basically written like a young man's diary of his intercation with UML. There are many places that Martin is telling us that he would not prefer to do that, nor give us a good explanation of why he prefers the other method. I felt like a student in an empty library when reading the book.I am a project manager with some OO experience, in UML, and after some reading and courses in UML, Martin should have known that a better name for his book is: "A UML diary by Martin Fowler"

If you are into the high ceremony, fill out every form, type of design documentation this book won't be detailed enough for you. If you are a working programmer who wants good ways to think about and communicate your software designs - this is the book for you.In our company we give it to all programmers we hire as an introduction to the design documentation techniques used within the company.
