I have just finished reading this book, and I have to say it could have been one of the most important books on service management and improvement I read in a long time. Sadly, John Seddon seems to have missed the opportunity to make this book a seminal text in the services business, for the following reasons:1. Mr. Seddon has very strong, almost religious, beliefs in his methodology and the Vanguard system he promotes. So much so that he has to identify enemies and burn them at the stake, repeatedly. His enemies range from supporters of competing methodologies, solution vendors, consultants, and worst of all 'managers', who he has to discredit and put down every other paragraph. John, they are your potential audience, I'd think you want them to read your book and adapt your system, no?2. Despite his strong belief in his system, Mr. Seddon does not disclose many details on how to actually make it work. The book is more a series of anecdotes with several nuggets of knowledge here and there, rather than a foundation for implementing a services improvement project based on its teachings3. Mr. Seddon and his publishers have not invested in editing, therefore the book does not read well, the paragraphs are frequently a non-flowing collection of sentences, words and phrases are put between quotes unnecessarily and many sections read like a collection of presentation bullets rather than a well thought of and assembled story4. The book is produced cheaply, using rough, thin paper and too narrow margins, leaving too little room for writing comments. For a book that costs as much as this one does this is inexcusable.I believe Mr. Seddon should have asked himself the same questions he promotes in this book: "what is the purpose of this book?" and "how would my customers want to see it delivered?", and while the answers would not have changed the excellent message they would have definitely made his book much more usable and influential.Despite this, I give the book four stars, due to the important message it carries.

One of the best books out there on the subject of Lean Service. This book changed my way of thinking as related to service and customer.

IF you're involved in service, read this book. Clear, easily understood connections between lean concepts and how they apply to the world of service - the one are in business with the highest degree of variability. This is a must read.

A fairly short (200 page) text that interprets and presents Lean techniques developed for manufacturing into specifics that can be immediately applied to service businesses. I have hightlighted and dog-eared almost every page in this book and refer to it often to help direct the focus of my work. I highly recommend it and have purchased copies for the other managers in my group.

This brief book offers a lot in a small package. Although the customer-driven systems management strategy that John Seddon outlines is hardly new, he offers a fresh discussion about applying it to service organizations. Although this management tactic has proven itself indisputably, many managers and most organizations will find it radical. The author clearly, concisely illustrates its merits with numerous examples from a range of industries, with particular reference to the successful Toyota Production System. However, Seddon is frank about the kind and degree of opposition that reform will encounter. He also debunks other management systems in light of this approach. We highly recommend this book to all managers with the note that you can only implement its findings if you enjoy the full support of top management.

If you are working in the service area and wonder why the service you provide is so bad despite all efforts, read this book.You will learn how to get reconnected with your customers, create value for them and improve your staff morale and profits.

Haven't had time to crack it open yet. I'm confident it is an excellent resource as it was recommended by a solid Dominican teacher.

Dr. Klauser presents a classical interpretation of the changes and developments in the liturgy from the time of Christ to Vatican Council II. The work is divided into four periods which have become standard designations: from the Ascension of Jesus to Gregory the Great, "creative beginnings," (30-590); from Gregory the Great to Gregory VII, "expansion under Franco-German preeminence," (590-1073); from Gregory VII to the Council of Trent, "luxuriant growth," (1073-1545); and from Trent to Vatican II, "unification and regulation," (1545-1963). Each period is introduced with a concise summary followed by Dr. Klauser's discussion. Four appendices are included and the translator has added a page of citations to supplement the 57-page bibliography.Of particular interest to the reader, Dr. Klauser does not hesitate to point out misdirections the Church has taken such as development of the cult of the sacrament playing out "the misuse of the mass as a devotional exercise in front of the monstrance" (p.139). In another example he discusses the shocking revisions to the liturgy brought about by Vatican II (p.153-159). In all, an easy (although scholarly) and informing read, laced with history and enlightening asides.

My understanding is that this book is going to be updated and if so, would be welcome. I read a ton of reviews that praised this book and while I'm sure they are correct, it's not light reading. I also felt that some topics weren't covered too well for someone that isn't a novice but isn't an expert either. It's written very matter-of-factly, so I felt like if you are strong at this topic or have a good solid foundation, you'll be good. If you are a newer person or looking to have a clearer understanding, I feel that this let me down a bit.

I've not completed reading this book yet but let me tell you this is absolutely the book that needed to be written on this subject. I've taken lots of courses in forensics and this re-established the knowledge from those courses. I can confirm the validity of the information provided from the courses I've taken and it's served as a good mix of new material and refresher material. Granted, I have a few hundred pages to go but the way this is going I can't recommend it enough. This is basically The Bible of file systems. It's a book you should read once simply to have the exposure to the knowledge he provides. No regrets with this purchase. Wholeheartedly recommending this to anyone who wants to go above and beyond in this field.

It's a little out dated (2006) but all the basics are there. Microsoft has rewritten some of the rules recently and you have to read up on those but this will give you a start. That is why I bought it!

An informative book can get a bit dense at times. This book helped me with an operating systems class. It is one book for the reference bookshelf, digital or otherwise.

This book is the beginning and ending point for anyone who needs to know how to forensically examine a computers hard drive. Understanding the file system layouts and forensic procedures described in this book is necessary to truly testify as an expert, otherwise you are just trusting that what ever tool you use is going to work. Carrier does a very good job of laying out all of the steps necessary to create a forensically sound disk image as well as going into all of the details of how the most commonly used file systems are structured and how to examine them at the lowest levels using a simple hex editor. While this book alone will not make you a forensic expert, it provides all of the information necessary to perform a forensic examination of the most common file systems and the procedure it lays out on how to perform the examination can be used on any file system.

I can't say enough good things about this book and author. The material is beautifully laid out and the writing style is fluid and effortless. The author has a real talent for using metaphors and figures to illustrate elusive concepts.All but the very rarest file systems are covered, and numerous 'screenshots' show how to use the Linux command prompt and get your hands dirty exploring disks on your own.While this book is a gold standard for digital forensic examiners, it would also be valuable to the computer enthusiast who's interested in things such as what happens to their hard drive when they format it, exactly what happens during the boot process, etc.I've had 3 courses in digital forensics, and this book gives an in-depth discussion of disk level concepts (HPA, FAT, MFT, etc) that were merely glossed over in my formal studies.

This isn't beach reading by any stretch of the imagination. I used the book as a read-along for some online seminars I was doing in digital forensics, and it helped me to understand the concepts better. Brian Carrier is also the author of the Sleuth Kit forensics package. It's a must have if you're doing any kind of digital forensics or data recovery work.

This is an excellent book for an introduction to file systems. This was a required text for a college course in digital forensics and it was a good learning supplement

The life of John Marshall (1755–1835) spans the first and formative decades of the United States. Born in colonial Virginia, Marshall fought for American independence under George Washington, whom he revered as the beau ideal of a true republican and memorialized in a biography. “For the rest of his life,” Richard Brookhiser writes, “John Marshall saw Washington as his commander and himself as one of his troops.” And so, when Washington personally urged Marshall to run for Congress in 1798, he didsuccessfully, representing Virginia’s 13th District from 1799–1800.Like Washington, Marshall was a Federalist. John Adams tapped him to be U.S. Secretary of State in 1800. After the momentous 1800 election, in which Adams and the Federalists lost both the White House and Congress to Thomas Jefferson and the Democratic-Republicans, Adams appointed Marshall chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court the month before Jefferson’s inauguration. Marshall and Jefferson were cousins, and though both were patriots, they were indefatigable political foes. Marshall swore Jefferson into office, then used Supreme Court legal opinions to continue the Federalist battle against the Democrats for the next 34 years. When he died, Andrew Jackson was president. Roger Taney—author of the Dred v. Scott infamy—succeeded him as chief justice.Richard Brookhiser surveys Marshall’s “public career and its effects” in his engaging new study. This is not a comprehensive biography of the great man. In many ways, it is the story of the most significant cases he tried: Marbury v. Madison, United States vs. Burr (in which Jonathan Edwards’ grandson and Alexander Hamilton’s killer stood trial for treason), Fletcher v. Peck, Trustees of Dartmouth College v. Woodward, McCullough v. Maryland, Cohens v. Virginia, Gibbons v. Ogden, the Antelope case (touching on slavery), Ogden v. Saunders (a bankruptcy case, this Ogden being the nephew of the previous Ogden—evidence of a litigious family, no doubt; also, the only case in which Marshall wrote a dissenting opinion), The Cherokee Nation v. Georgia and Worcester v. Georgia (both cases dealing with Georgia’s abominable treatment of Native Americans), and Barron v. Baltimore, among others.Though not well known today, outside the legal profession at least, these cases were flashpoints of controversy between a broadly Federalist vision of the American republic and a Democratic one. Was the United States a “union” or a “confederacy”? Where was the boundary between federal supremacy and states’ rights? Could Congress establish a Bank of the United States without explicit wording in the Constitution? More broadly, was the law a “debt against the living,” in which generations were obligated by the laws of previous generations? Or did “the land belong in usufruct to the living,” in which each generation passed laws as it saw fit? The words were Madison’s and Jefferson’s, respectively, but the sentiments were Marshall’s and Jefferson’s exactly.Brookhiser is a political journalist, not a lawyer, so his descriptions of both the facts of these cases and their relevance are easy to follow and enlightening. In a summary chapter on Marshall’s legacy, he notes that Marshall brought “dignity” to the Supreme Court. How it tried cases and how it rendered opinions strengthened the hand of what Hamilton called “the least dangerous branch” of the federal government. If the membership and opinions of the Supreme Court loom large in the minds of Americans today, Marshall should receive credit.But more than the dignity of the Supreme Court, Marshall’s legacy, was “defending the Constitution as the people’s supreme act.” Brookhiser explains: “The people had made a new government, giving it new powers, and binding it with new prohibitions…. Marshall devoted his decades as chief justice to explicating and upholding the people’s government against the attacks of men he deemed demagogues in Congress, in the states (including his own Virginia), and in the White House (including his own cousin).” That defense relied on the Constitution’s “words” and—sometimes or—“the historical context of its creation.” Marshall knew both intimately. He had worked for the document’s ratification. He had witnessed the struggles and trials that had brought it into being.In the last months of his life, as his health deteriorated, Marshall feared for the future of the Constitution he had spent his life laboring to explain and defend. Marshall’s opinions “were substantially the policies of Washington and his most trusted aide, Alexander Hamilton”—slavery being the great exception. But by 1835, Jackson was in power, states’ rights were on the rise, and Roger B. Taney was in the wings. From then until the Civil War, an anti-Marshall view of the nature of the U.S. government and the meaning of its Constitution prevailed. It was as if the arguments between the cousins—Marshall and Jefferson—had never gone away.Today, we live in a vastly different era. Both union and emancipation are taken for granted, which they were not in Marshall’s era, not even by Marshall himself. But the court Marshall once led continues to fascinate and repel, depending on who wins and who loses before the bench. To that extent, as William Faulkner put it so well, “The past is never dead. It’s not even past.” We all live in John Marshall’s shadow.

There are many solid bios of the "Great Chief Justice" available, just two others came out this year. What I like about this one by Richard Brookhiser is that it avoids the pitfalls of being too detailed and too legal. At 307 pages (including notes and bibliography) it is long enough for a solid analysis, but not so long as to included loads of detailed information that would overwhelm the reader. Instead of discussing dozens of cases, the author instead takes his time and devotes single chapters to a number of important Marshall decisions. Not being a lawyer, he tries to follow Marshall's thinking as he examines each case, and any complicated concepts (such as mandamus) are explained in understandable lay terms. Brookhiser is also adept at painting just enough of the background history of what is going on so that the reader easily can match each decision to its historical context, and he accomplishes this without going into mind-numbing detail.The first 74 pages are devoted to Marshall's youth, service in the Revolutionary War, his role as Adams' Secretary of State, and appointment as Chief Justice. Once again, the author takes his time and does not cram too much information into the narrative. Two aspects of this period I found particularly interesting: (1) Marshall's lifelong devotion to Washington and his political concepts; and (2) just how rich a pre-Court background Marshall brought to his service as Chief Justice.The second sections (pp. 77-137) presents Marshall's initial cases, including some of the most important in American constitutional development: "Marbury v. Madison"; the use of impeachment against two Federalist justices; the infamous Burr "treason" trial; and the Yazoo land scandal litigation. The author's skill at rendering understandable analysis of complicated issues is demonstrated in the Burr chapter; historians are still arguing about what Burr was or was not up to in his plotting with General Wilkinson. Brookhiser's discussion is cogent and well disentangles this bizarre episode.The third section, covering pages 137-192, focuses upon the mature and confident Marshall in his prime, fully in control of his Court despite the efforts of Jefferson and other political opponents. Included are chapters on the Dartmouth College case decided under the contract clause; "McCulloch" which delineated the "necessary and proper" clause while limiting state power to tax federal instrumentalities; "Cohens v. Virginia" where Marshall denied any state judicial power to overrule Supreme Court decisions; and the famous Steamboat decision where Marshall articulated a vigorous theory of commerce that the Court is still grappling with today. Brookheiser covers a lot of constitutional law here, but makes it understandable by infusing it with the historical and political backgrounds to the decisions.The final section (pp. 195-260) deals with Marshall's "waning years." Here he confronts cases involving who owns slave ships seized by the government; the development of federal bankruptcy law; the two famous Cherokee Indian cases with which Andrew Jackson refused to abide; and the vital "Baron v. Baltimore" decision holding that the Bill of Rights did not apply to the states. The book concludes with an interesting epilogue on the legacy of Marshall, Jefferson, and Lincoln.This is not an advanced textbook on constitutional law, crammed with legal detail and extensive academic analysis--nor is it meant to be. Rather this is the Marshall bio for the average reader who has some interest, but is not looking for an expansive professorial analysis. By reading the book, one can be brought up to a fairly high level of understanding about Marshall, the importance of his decisions, and the historical background of his Court all in 300 or so pages. Concise but complete, the author has told Marshall's story effectively and in understandable terms. No reader can ask for more than that.

A nice, tight biography of John Marshall. While the outline of his personal story is given, the heart of this book is a simplified review--aimed at the common reader--of the sequence of important constitutional cases decided by the Marshall Court. As Richard Brookhiser rightfully points out, Chief Justice Marshall, in large part, fashioned the U.S. Supreme Court into the respected and powerful third branch of government that we know today.I think this book would be an excellent choice for one thinking of attending law school; the average citizen trying to make sense of our complex constitutional heritage; anyone who thinks partisan politics first entered into the public debate over the Supreme Court and the appointment of its justices with recent Senate confirmation battles; or the reader simply seeking a short, accurate book on the life of a great American.For those who want to go deeper into constitutional history or thought, I suggest reading any book by Yale Professor Akhil Reed Amar, an expert mentioned by Mr. Brookhiser in his concluding acknowledgements.

I was disappointed. While an excellent exposition of many of the cases decided by the Marshall court within the political and societal frameworks of their time, there was little revealed of Marshall the man, except through the lens of those decisions. (N.B. - I am an attorney)

Most years I treat myself to a new Christmas or holiday cookbook and I've found some real winners over the years. This year I found two! One of my daughters lives in the UK so I am well acquainted with Fortnum & Mason's - one of the world's biggest department stores, known all over the world for their tea & provisions. Whether you're climbing Mt. Everest or taking a picnic to the park, they've got you covered. And of course their Christmas Hampers are legendary. The current Imperial fills 5 large hampers and includes both a ham and a tea set - not to mention a special party cracker that sits in the middle of your table and explodes, showering goodies all over the room. (Fortnum & Masons pioneered the party cracker. )Usually cookbooks first published in the UK appear there weeks or months before they do here, but as it happens Fortnum & Mason's Christmas and Other Winter Feasts is the rare exception, much to my daughter's chagrin. I was so excited to tell her about this book - and she was so disappointed because that was what she had intended to send me for Christmas. (Ah well, great minds think alike!)Loaded with the history of various fall and winter holidays and recipes for every event of the season, Fortnum & Mason's Christmas is a work of art, lavishly illustrated from their collection of artwork that goes back to 1910 or so. Easy to read, easy to cook from , this is a book you will treasure for years to come.Now, if you live on this side of the pond there are a few things you will want to remember: measurements are in metrics, so you will want a cooking scale. (One can be had for <$20.} Strong flour is bread flour, plain flour is all purpose and caster sugar is the same as bartenders sugar, though I've noticed of late that Domino's is as fine as caster sugar. UK medium eggs are US large and 180C is 350F.As it happens, this is not the first Fortnum & Mason's Cookbook I happen to own. Some years ago my granddaughter gave me a small volume entitled Tea at Fortnum & Mason's, chockfull of recipes for many of the items they serve at their famous Afternoon Tea. I have cooked that little book nearly to shreds, so I've no qualms about recommending this volume to you "uncooked."One special note: While you'll find plenty of recipes to make your winter holidays special, this is the season when fresh game is available almost everywhere in the UK. If you're lucky enough to have a hunter in the family or feel like splurging a bit you'll find a fair few wonderfully classic recipes for venison, partridge, quail, pheasant and rabbit. Enjoy!Highly Recommended! Merry Christmas!

The book gives an excellent show of various styles and the processes the artist goes through to assemble their drawing, however if you are looking for an in depth explanation or tutorial of style this is probably not what you were hoping for. I enjoyed the book, because it does explain technique behind pictures. It is not a step-by-step guide by any means. This reads more like an art textbook to explain theory to you than a how-to-draw book, which I prefer.

Love this series. I have both Vol 1 & 2. Tutorials are well written and easy to follow. This is a great source for inpiration and maybe to try out a technique that you havent used before. I am a Computer Graphics mayor with a Focus in Multimedia. Some of the techniques used here I have used for set design in green screen productions. So this is a good book to help explore techniques, you just need to find the time to do it.

Nice and glossy, but thin on actual useful details. I paid too much for this.

A second great volume from 3d Total! I enjoy the heavy page graphics that show clearly what the artists are doing, the concepts and directions they look at, and a good step by step on their technique. I can't wait for volume 3!

Digital Painting Techniques:Volume 2 had a few interesting pages that was not just about painting and drawing, but about the artists' thought process. The book was organized into different chapters specific to certain techniques, ie. creating brushes, painting on a 3d model, drawing spaceships, using photo references etc.The con of this book was there were some tutorials that were not as detailed and thorough as the others. Unfortunately, some of the great artwork that was shown on the last few pages were not included for tutorials. Minor nitpicks were layout problems. The reader would have to keep turning the page to read what the artist was referring to on the previous page or vice versa. I preferred finished illustrations on one page rather than two pages in a book due to the fold in the middle of the illustration. It destroys it for me, but it's personal preference of course.Overall, it was a somewhat informative book, but wish it was more indepth with the digital painting techniques, including a cd with brushes and videos.

The package got to me on time and just the way it was described! Love this book. a good continuation of the first digital paintings technique book. overall happy with everything. :)

LOVE IT! This is the best book to use for learning now techniques in PS! I have been using the program for.... well a long time.. and even experienced as I am I am learning new things... allot of new things from these books. They are the most informative and easy to learn from then some of these other books I have bought in the past. I have recommended these to many of my friends and co-workers and they all seem to love it as well!

I really liked this book. Just skimming through it inspires you and the references and the guidance provided is nice if you know your stuff. I wouldn't recommend this book to a novice but its an excellent source for inspiration for a driven individual! Ought to have some basic understanding for learning through this book.
